Ice Report

It seems to be early for this but..... We noticed some areas are already iced in.
States Landing in Moultonboro, Lower Melvin River in Tuftonboro, Melvin Village Marina and Pier 19 in Tuftonboro. The warmer temps this week may slow it down but the night time temps may keep it from disappearing completely. If its gonna happen, let it happen real quick. Fire up the sleds and get the bob houses ready.:)

While driving down Rte 106 earlier today we were stunned to discover that Rocky Pond in Loudon is completely under a thin coat of ice! Don't know how thick it is, or if the coming warmth will do away with it, but it sure was nice to see ice! :D

I think that it's time to get that boat OUT of the WATER!!!

And that thin coat of ice is gone as of Sunday 11-27. Even with overnight temps in the 20's, not enough to hold the ice in. You could see "flecks" of what may have been remnants of ice throughout the bay. Still it will not be long til the "ice in" watch will start in earnes.

Don't get me wrong - I want ice as soon as possible, but would prefer a bit later ice-in, once the water goes down a bit. The water is down a foot from its high point, but the level is still mighty high - mid-summer high. If the lake ices-in now, it is likely that the water will go down another foot or so, after ice-in. There will be a lot of fallen ice ridges. The sledding won't be very good, or safe. We have been spoiled in the last two years by a late ice-in that ended up very safe lake-wide riding by late January - early February. The forecast for the next 8-14 days - early December- is for above normal temperatures and dry http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/814day/ Maybe it will all work out. Keep the water flowing.

Its definitely time to get the boats out! I went up yesterday and had to break through 150 feet of fairly solid ice in the Gilford Yacht Club channel to get out. After 2 hours with axes and and hitting it with the boat in reverse we managed to get out. There was another pontoon trapped further into the club (we are just outside) and I broke it up for him to get out. What a nightmare!

Yikes, Codeman! That sounds like a nightmare, indeed! :eek:

Hope you managed without sustaining any damage to the boat or your back! Ouch!

Glad to know you're safely out of the water, and I hope your neighbor in the pontoon gets out soon too.

Stay off the ice.

Some poor soul out in western mass decided to go ice fishing. His equipment was spotted out on the ice by a passer-by who contacted the PD. Upon further investigation, the anxious fisherman was found dead under the ice (WMUR news report this morning).

Life is to short, let's let Mother Nature take its course and have a safe winter season.

Upon review, my previous post sounds a little harsh. So I want to back-pedal. It is terribly tragic and unnecessary...although infinitely avoidable.

Two inches of ice already? In Mass? That's pretty good for this time of year. But still...

Only a matter of time now before we start seeing the PhotoPost images of shiny SUVs sticking butt-first out of the ice. Let's be careful out there, folks, and try not to leave any more toxic junk on the bottom (although a new dive attraction every once in a while is ALWAYS welcome!).

I went past Alton this noon and the ice has pretty much gone out. There where a few smaller pieces drifting inside the band stand. The fog was still around but not as thick as yesterday or earlier this morning.

By the time I got to Rochester, the tempature had risen to 55 degrees. If you have a bost still in, it looks like it is now time to get it out. The weather looks cold but windy this weekend.

Thats what I heard on the news this morning. I'm not sure what station it was on. (I think maybe channel five, WCVB?)

I saw the story on one of the Boston stations.They showed the body of water where the accident occured and it was all open water.I'm guessing the ice that was referenced to was just along the immediate shore.
