I didn't know that what is reported to be the most expensive high school in America ($85.000.00 per year) is located near Lake Winnipesaukee in Milton, NH.

NH has its share of exclusive college prep schools (a.k.a. boarding schools) for the rich/elite kiddos:

New England is loaded with high-end private schools. Andover and Exeter are often considered the best in America, Groton has a hall of presidential letters, and even the second-tier "sports" schools like Catholic Memorial and BC High have great success.

My experience, having run programs for one of the top 10 private schools in MA, and tutored students from many of the rest, is that it's the kids, not the schools, that make the difference.

In terms of NH, when I gave up the summer gig in MA, I started networking with private schools near my camp—Holderness and Brewster were the closest—but I just couldn't take the final step after being free for the first time in 15 years.

Among the many aspects of being lucky to live in New England are the educational opportunities.

These are not super exclusive schools for the elite or rich. My son just started at New Hampton and many of us are hard working dual income families getting by so there kids can get an excellent education.

I live 30 minutes from there and I’ve never heard of the place. And spent five years working in Milton.

I believe Short ridge is a therapeutic school for emotionally troubled kids. I know little about it but would not judge it by some kids complaint on Reddit. I am a prep school parent so am in that world and I had never heard of it before.

If you read their website, the school is “therapeutic”, which indicates that the students have a variety of emotional/mild drug/anxiety/depression problems. It even mentions that some of the enrollees have been participants in various wilderness programs. This is not your usual secondary boarding school, and that explains the $85k tuition. I had never heard of the place before today’s post.

I can only speak to one of the schools on this list:
-It's in the Lakes Region
-It's a five week summer program
-Today's cost is $14,900
-Some students arrive from their full-year school, then go back at the end of this one
-Each parent is guaranteed a glowing review of their student's performance
-Quite a nice facility on a small body of water

I'm sure my comments don't apply to most of the schools listed (or mentioned by others), but this kind of expensive set-up does exist.

Sounds like Wolfeboro Camp School. It didn't open this year.

This list pretty much covers every private school in New Hampshire. A few of them, like Shortridge Academy, are for students with special needs.

It's my understanding that private schools above the 12th grade have to pay NH property taxes. So, that basically means that private schools, grades k-12, pay NO property tax, while private colleges do pay property tax.

So, where are the NH private colleges that pay property taxes? Are there any left besides Dartmouth which probably makes a negotiated payment in lieu of taxes to the Town of Hanover?

NH has a lot of private high schools, but very few private colleges.

NH is supposedly the only state out of all 50-states that imposes the local property tax on private colleges, that have students above the 12th-grade of education.

www.education.nh.gov/who-we-are/division-of-educator-support-and-higher-education/closed-colleges-universities shows a list of 16 different private colleges that have closed. Many are in towns that definitely miss their local student and teacher populations who would stop into the general store to buy a lottery ticket and a pack of smokes, among other items and services in the local economy.
