Part 1-
How many powerboats do you think “reside” on the Lake mid-season?? This includes valet.

Powerboats have a propellar (large or small) ie. No PWC’s included.

Part 2 -

When you determine part 1 - how much in dollars $$ do you think is tied up in boats on this Lake??

There are quite a few jet boats (Yamaha, Crownline, etc) that have impellers instead of propellers. PWC-style craft rated to carry three or more passengers are registered as boats. My guess is that you mean to count those craft that look like traditional boats or pontoons, yes?

I have no idea what the count should be.

Before I even start to guess it would help to know how many waterfront homes are on the lake. Anyone know that? You can start with a minimum of 1 boat for each house.

Can someone estimate - what would that $100K boat cost if bought used just one year later? Assume reasonable use during that first year, all fresh water, and no major issues with condition/operations. What would that one year old, essentially new, boat cost?

I did a quick search of NADA power boat values.
A new high end Bennington pontoon boat and a one year old (same boat) just base value, mind you, with no options
The 2020 had an “average retail value” of $99.5k and the 2019 had an “average retail value” of about $16k less.
I would guess that this is mostly correct, however, there are many factors with sellers and buyers that would come into play in a non-hypothetical sale/purchase.
Your question was basically, a general value question.

When it comes to used values, context matters. Used jetskis, boats, ATVs, etc. were selling ABOVE new this summer because of the pandemic equation: need something to do + free time + stimulus money + shortage = used costs.

This wonder/next summer? Who knows, but I'm guessing there will be a fair amount of people looking to unload things they thought they'd use and, ultimately, don't or can't.

Honestly, I'm afraid what'll happen to all those pets people adopted when their owners need to start working in-person again.

You’d be surprised how well the ski/wake boats hold there value. I bought one new for 128k sold it a year later with 120 hours for 125k.

Will sell my current boat next summer for about what I paid for it as well if the market stays as it is.

This was an incredibly good year to sell a boat or Jet Ski because of Covid 19
but generally boats aren't a good investment.
As the old saying goes "a boat is a hole in the water that you pour money into".

At a meeting about milfoil a few years ago, the question asked was:"How much money will the state put into milfoil control if we raise the milfoil fee $1?"
The answer was there are about 100,000 b oats registered in NH and about 40,000 of these consider Winnipesaukee as their primary use location.
There are a lot of old boats on the lake, old, to me, in this case meaning 15+ years. Boats vary so much it's hard to imagine an average price that isn't just a guess, but I guess average is $50,000.

(I assumed big open docks will have a boat in them, I counted boats on land at the Marinas, and assumed boat houses had one boat in them. LOL -- well seems we have one solid vote, but it is only Meredith Bay, leaving a whole lot of Lake yet to be counted (or guessed at).

As far as the Dollars -- STOP trying to get a depreciated value - it's just a fun exercise.

For me, given the number of high end cruisers ($250k-350k) combined with the more popular runabouts ($70k-$125k) add in the smaller one, including those little dinghy's with a 10 hp ($150.00 - $25k) and just for spice, don't leave out those MEGA boats like the Galeon & 50' Regal recently posted ($600k-$900k)...……. I'd guess it's safe to use a $60k - arguably as high as $100k figure as the average.

( this is because I feel there are a whole lot of 28'-35' cruisers tilting the number scale)…………. just my view -- but then again, there aren't a whole lot of those up through Moultonboro - So I can be swayed easily :)


Also - keep in mind the MVYC alone has 258 boats resident (not including their valet).

Lets give ourselves and accuracy of 10%.....so the window is between
36,000 and 44,000 boats....seems reasonable...I say this because If I look at my little road on LI, there is a roughly 2 boats per house average...and about 40 houses on the water.... so that is 80 boats per road... so total number of boats divided by 80 boats per road is 450 some such roads around the lake... Seems reasonable given all the islands, Marinas, and Valet storage that would also need to be factored in here....

Now lets talk about boat value if I look at my 2 20 year old boats from Nada Low Retail: 7.2K + 6.6K = 13.6K

so we get a pricing range of $489M - $598M

now if I look at what my boats would cost new, I would think one is about $40K, and the other is about the same..... based on what I know... so that is around 80K which gives us the following price range $2.8B- $3.5B

Now average those two we end up at $1.6B to $2.0B worth of boats floating around on Winnipesaukee....

I could go on and on with this... But I would think on any given weekend in the summer, that is a good estimate of how much money is sitting in Winnipesaukee.

That's about 27 acres apiece. If 200 of them were in the channel and Paugus, that's over 30 acres each. Not really so crowded are we?

I was in the rack system years ago and can't remember if it was 2 or three boats high. I assumed 2.
I didn't count the valet docks and made a guess at the number of boats in the valet racks.

I bet I'm correct within a 100 :) And if not....it was all for fun.

Probably 10 years plus. There are hundreds of posts about speed limits in the Issues section of the Forums. Around 2008, the number of boats on the lake started dropping along with the economy. There were vacancies, auction sales, boats stored, where now there are waiting lists for slips and valet. We are now back up to those numbers I thin k.

As best as I could with the method described earlier in the thread, I counted them. Learned a lot about the lake following every foot of shorefront and have some places to boat to that I've seen on the map that I haven't been to yet.

How did you deal with the islands? At any given time islands boats may be on island or at a marina or at town docks like Glendale or on a trailer or under way.

The 284 slips are the slips that have owners. The valet slips are a different story but I would assume that the count you used for valet boats would include that since those slips are not assigned to a specific boat.
