Christmas trees? Anyone have a recommendation for tree farms on “the Walmart Side of the Lake”?

We are now here full time, retired after long and fulfilling careers, enjoying our first Christmas here. Living the dream on the lake...!! Looking forward to our first holiday season up north!

Cut one down in the national forest... costs 5 bucks for a permit at the ranger station in Lincoln. Permits are limited and start being issued usually thanksgiving weekend. Once gone they are gone.

I should have clarified this, there are rules for doing this and size limits. Any tree taken CANNOT be sawed down, so leave the chain saw at home.... need to take it down with an axe.

Trees must be taken only on National Forest land, and if you don't know where to go the folks there at the ranger station can help point you to areas where there are good stands of spruce trees. It's a lot of fun and lots of people do it.

There are too many Hallmark Christmas movies playing at my house and we bought a Balsam Hills artificial tree this year. Between the tree decorating scenes and tree ads it was just too much. It looks pretty good and hopefully we won’t regret spending the money. I keep having flashbacks to my childhood when we had an artificial silver tree with a few branches and a rotating red, green and blue light. If there had been a Star Trek Christmas episode it would have included a tree like ours.

I'm out in Oregon now....wholesale Christmas tree farms with 14,000 trees! The Pacific Northwest is like New England on steroids!!

WMNF main office: about one mile off Rt 93-Exit 27 in Campton, watch for the brown signs.

Interesting how the tree tag permit doubles as a parking permit/recreation pass at a trail head parking lot while out searching your Christmas tree!

Today on Nov 30, one could drive to the WMNF Forest Service headquarters in Campton, pay five dollars for a tree permit, and drive to the depot camp parking lot on the north side of Waterville Valley for cross country skiing on the Livermore Rd, a single lane dirt forest service road, 7-miles long, closed to cars, and search for that perfect Christmas tree, all for five bucks, without having the $30/year car windshield sticker pass. Except, as a federal office, (603) 536-6100, it is probably closed today on Saturday?

So, who says that skiing at Waterville Valley is ridiculously over priced, and you don't get hardly any exercise because the lift does all the effort?

And yes, the WMNF has forest service cops in white suv forest service police cars that say 'Law Enforcement' in big green letters ..... so's you could get busted for removing a Christmas tree without the 5-dollar tree tag ....... www.fs.fed.us/lei/working-for-law-enforcement.php ..... so, don't even think about doing that!

Did you know that before the WMNF was established in 1912 by the Weeks Act, it was commonly called the 'forest reserve' ..... a-yuh! .... and the Town of Livermore was a happening NH town ...... now, Livermore ain't no more!
