Took my family of four to the Sandwich Fair last week. Entry costs weren't terrible, and we're used to the rides being overpriced, but this year the games pricing was shocking: $5 for most. $20 for my kids to play two games. I don't recall them being so high the year before last (weather kept us away last year)?

I think with all the livestock, some dogs may be unbearable...and...my dog goes everywhere with me. She can stay in the truck and in the AC OR heat whichever is appropriate.
I check on her every 30 minutes.

That's why we don't go too.

Yes, you can't bring your dog but we have to walk by plenty of people blowing smoke or vaping right next to you.

That is disgusting! Hard to believe you can’t bring a leashed dog to a fair that promotes farming and animals!

Why would anyone abuse their animal by taking it to a place that is packed with humanity and strange animals? It makes zero sense. Many people assume that everyone is fine with people bringing their dogs to everything, and that just isn’t so. People need to use better judgement. JMO. Go ahead and lob raw eggs....I can take it. 🙄

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion. I also even as a long time dog owner I agree with you. Don’t even get me started on “service animals” and animals on airplanes. Yes they are extremely important to those that actually need them but many use the term just so they can take their pet everywhere.

[emoji849]This was my first thought as well.
My second was why anyone would let a pet prevent them from having a good time. I love dogs as much as the next guy, but if Fido needs to stay home for a bit while I enjoy some fried Oreos, so be it!

I don't bring my dog everywhere but I guess I just assumed a country fair with farm animals everywhere would welcome dogs. It wasn't a big deal, we headed to Wolfboro that day and walked around. Then we went to Nolans and sat outdoors for a nice lunch. They were happy to take my dog and my money. I've been to a lot of fairs over the
years so not getting into this one was not going to ruin my day. I'm not complaining I just thought it was odd.

See, I always thought the opposite--that visiting dogs might both be skittish and cause the animals to be.

You are absolutely correct. The dogs do make many of the animals skittish unless they have regularly been around dogs

Mine would most likely be pushed in a carriage or carried so they wouldn't scare any animals nor would they be harmed.

It's not a big deal and I should have checked the website first. We were just looking for something to do that day and we thought the fair would be a good time. We found other things to do and it was a good day with the dog anyway. :) No big deal but we probably will not go back.

The obnoxious crowd, the commercialism, etc. makes fairs less appealing. I'd rather go to the 4H Fairs.
The trip to Sandwich is worth the ride. I would head into Sandwich from Holderness. Take a quick hike up Rattlesnake. Stop at the Corner House for lunch. Head down Sandwich Notch Rd to Tamworth. Ride up to Waterville Valley. Take Tripoli Road to Rte 3, head up to Conway for dinner at Woodstock Inn. If I have time a ride down the Woodstock-Rumney stagecoach road. Usually the foliage at the time is absolutely stunning! This route is the road less traveled and you go at you own pace!

The ladies wanted to stop at the crap fair in town, lots of dogs although we didn't bring our dogs. After we went to The Woodstock Inn and sat out on the deck and had lunch.
C'mon could you imagine (literally) 300 dogs walking around the already cramped fairground? Really? I like Dogs as much as the next person and have had my share but the Sandwich Fair just doesn't work. Your (pet) will survive at home alone for 4 or 5 hours while you enjoy the fair without him or her. If not well stay away I guess... :rolleye2:

There are plenty other things to in the lakes region.
I've been to enough fairs that I don't really need to go to anymore. Most have morphed in to a carnival type atmosphere now anyway.
That's what we do, we stay away.
To each his own thousands and thousands still enjoy it.

We love going to the Sandwich Fair. We don't spend a lot of time over in the midway area where the rides are. Watching the various competitions, going through the various exhibits, watching 4H kids exhibit their projects & animals, etc makes for a slow paced day of relaxation.
Does it get crowded? Yes Do you have to wait in lines? Yes. Are we in a rush to go from one event to another? Nope.

we tried to go a few years ago. got stuck in traffic for 2 hours trying to get to the fair grounds. finally got there, and all the parking areas were full. we made 3 passes back and forth trying to find a place to park but eventually gave up and went home. haven't been back since.

I do like the Sandwich Fair, but the Fryeburg, ME Fair is much larger and nicer and really not the far of a drive and it's on the same weekend.

I agree, but being one of those folks where each Monday is the start of another vacation week, we go to Fryeburg during the week, sometimes on Tuesday (senior day), sometimes on a different weekday. Less crowded than Fryeburg on a weekend.

This year, we were there at 9 and it didn't really get busy until noon, when we left. It's a gorgeous place to be on a fall morning!
