Perhaps this has been debated in the past but could not find it when searching.


I always remember the bay in front of MVYC & Silver Sands being called Saunders Bay ………….. of late all the maps & printed materials seem to have dropped the "u" ……………. What is the correct version/pronunciation?

If my recollection is indeed correct - why did it get changed ?

Here is a map from 2010, the title and map say "Sanders", but the bar graph says "Saunders" ......

When I google it --- I get numerous entries referring to Saunders Bay -- including a UNH study that was conducted in 2011 ……… then to confirm I am not losing my mind, I came across this postcard on eBay.

Known it as Saunders as well. Maybe its a case of Gilford where somehow along the way the u (Guilford) got dropped :)

I would not disagree with what you state -- but in this case it changes the phonetic name completely "Sawn-ders" versus "San-ders".

The E.M. Burwell chart of Lake Winnipissiogee dated 1911 says Sanders Bay.

The NH Department of Safety 1964-1965 chart says Sander's Bay.

The 1984-1985 Duncan chart says Saunder's Bay

Bizer's 6th Edition chart says Sander's Bay.

And Thus my dilemma and question


I have always known it as Saunders …. but as pointed out, that could be because my original orientation to the Lake (many moons ago) was via the Duncan charts ….. but that would not impact the Motel I found above

Many decades (all my life) on the lake, I have always heard Saunders, but my 1962 chart published by the NH Public Utilities Commission (the yellow and blue chart preceding Duncan) says Sanders. LFOD tradition allows you to say it one way and spell it the other.

Me too, learn a lot of interesting stuff. Still think it's something in the water in Guilford - I mean Gilford - that makes them drop their Us :) Of course Gilmanton was Gilmantown so I guess we drop our Ws.

Me to and probably the people that visited here as well. Never noticed a name change until you brought up this topic. Always called it "Saunders Bay".
If you said to me where is Sanders Bay I would say back "you must mean Saunders Bay" with the U.

...As long as I've been coming to the lake, (since early 70's), I've always heard people pronounce it "Saunders Bay", and like others, I have seen it spelled both ways, (but definitely more as "Saunders") I work with a Dutch guy whose first name is spelled "Sander", but it is pronounced, "Saunder".

So....maybe our Bay is just like the Dutch guy's name....??
