Just a reminder, folks, that this is Old Home Day(s) this weekend, and Saturday is going to be filled with activities all day. Here's a link to the calendar section of this website: http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2005-8-13&c=1

Starting at 9 AM and running til noon is the Alton Bay boat show at the Alton town docks. NH boat museum is putting this on.

Also starting at 9 is the Alton Old Home 5K road race. Pretty gentle course running from the bay area then east on rte 11 to the letter S road (running along the Merrymeeting river to Rte 140, then up to the village, and west on Rte 11 back down to the bay. Only one small uphill.

Starting at 10 and going to 5 is the AltonBay craft Fair. Homemade crafts at Railroad Park (the bay) and the Alton Bay community center (the old railroad startion in the bay). Craft fair will also be open on Sunday from 9-3.

There is a concert at 7-9 by the Echo Tones (Classic Rock).

At 9:20, Fireworks from the barge located just NW of the floating bandstand. If you come by boat, you can come past the band stand to the dock area, or anchor in that end of the bay between Shibleys at the Pier and Downings/Gillens, or you can remain out in the bay outside the two markers off the bridge into the Back Bay and from there out to Sandy Point.

Added: Rain date for fireworks will be Sunday the 14th.

Come by boat, walk (if you're local), or by car. Enjoy the festivities, and

Thank you, UP!
My Mom and I enjoyed the craft fairs and such together here! She told me of how much the views of Alton area reminded her of her birthplace on Cape Breton Island, NS. Canada.
We did not know you then, I will tell you though that we are fans or yours!
Love,
T.

T --- I can concur with the Cape Breton comparison. As a young lad (11, I think), I was fortunate enough to take the Bluenose from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth NS, go Halifax, and then take the trip around the Cabot Trail, which in those days was a gravel road. The hills as I remember them were like the Belknaps and Sandwich mts, not huge, but mountains none the less, and remember my parents saying that it reminded them of NH!

My heritage is Scottish, and my relatives who immigrated from Scotland also compared NH and particularly the Lakes Region with Scotland.

The remembrances of our parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles...a shame we didn't have the digital cameras back then. So much may have been lost in memories.

Thanks for your comments.

..the heritages come out.. though I have never been there, my grandfather was born on Cape Breton Island. Interestingly though, the ancestors came to Cape Cod in 1620 and eventually migrated to Canada... and there are a few scots in the background too.

The Cabot Trail is indeed impressive. I thought it looked a lot like the ME coast.

See you all at old home days.

Any chance the road race will prevent me from driving into Downings Landing to launch my boat at 9AM?

Depending on from whence you cometh (I wax Shakespearean on occasion), you may have a little delay due to traffic. Once the race starts, the traffic heading east will be held and then follow the runners eastbound. There is usually an overlap between the runners heading east and those that make the turn uptown and start heading west. If you can get to Downings a little earlier, methinks it will be easier. Just don't hit my grandson....Go Ryan!!!!!!! first 5K race!

Just got back from a great week at the lake (we've never had a bad one) and wanted to say "thanks" to Alton for the events we attended on Sat. the 13th.
We enjoyed the classic boat show, Echo Tones concert and especially the fireworks. What an outstanding show! It was nice and long and what a finale!
We're looking forward to next year's events.
