Favorite Boat Rides

I live in Wolfeboro and enjoy several boat rides a great deal:

1. My favorite is right before sun set to head from Wolfeboro over to Winter Harbor. Staying about 150 yards off of the shore I like to enter Winter Harbor and drive along the entire shore line. Ending up exiting Winter Harbor into The Broads just as the sun sets in front of me across the Broads.

2. Early morning rides from Wolfeboro to Meredith to have breakfast at George's Diner. More often then not the lake is very calm.

3. I enjoy late night boat rides at headway speed when the moon is full.

4. Going for an ice cream cone with my young son on my lap 'driving the boat'.

Out of Alton Bay, around Clay Point and the back side of Barndoor Island, and into Wolfeboro for breakfast at the diner or the Yum Yum shop. Winter Harbor along the shore counter-clockwise is also one of my favorites. On busy days, a run up to Greens Basin or at least Lee's Mill via the Long Island bridge route is fun and quite interesting (perhaps even challenging navigation wise). 19 mile bay via the Graveyard is neat and usually mellow. Sally's Gut is always a treat. We like to go "gunkholing" through small and treacherous passages as much as possible. Nice to get away from the crowds.

We like Saturday night runs from Gilford to Alton Bay just before sunset following the shoreline for fried seafood at Pop's Clam Shell and ice cream followed by a leasurely ride back by moonlight.

Nice and quiet.... away from the big wakes and traffic!!!! Recently did this ride with a couple of great friends. Probably the most relaxing day I have had on the lake in years!!!!!!

If you haven't already, take your friends through "Sally's Gut" between Stonedam Island and Meredith Neck.

As much as the kids love the power boats and tubing, I love to take the canoe or kayak out onto the lake and cruise either early AM/late afternoon miday around the islands of Moultonborough Neck east. We've even canoed from Greene's up to the Loon Center in Lee's Mill. When it's quiet and the water is still it is lovely. Last week we didn't know it and I wished I'd have a camera but a loon came right up from under water about 10' from the canoe around Blanchard Island. I was "I want my camera" but my husband always thinks it will end up at the bottom of the lake and won't let me take the digital.

Best ride ever was TODAY.
I’m back in my boat today after 13 weeks of ankle surgery and recovery. My new ankle survived my ride. We went out of Wolfeboro Bay to south Wolfeboro Bay. Followed the shore line around Springfield Point, checked out Melody Island, went around the Varneys, check out the Bahre complex, cut across the Boards to Treasure Island, went along the West Alton shore, circled Rattlesnake Island, cut back across the boards to Wolfeboro Neck, checked out Jockey cove after drifting in the Boards, and then went back to Wolfeboro and made a perfect landing. This was a real mental health ride.

Life is best while drifting in the Boards. Now I will have to plan a sunset Boards trip.

Our grandaughter loves Sally's Gut-- she sees sharks, hippos and alligators where the adults only see rocks and fallen trees. It's like the Jungle Cruise at Disney to her. What a gift to have such an imagination!

My favorite cruise is at dusk around Columbus Day when the lake is calm & quiet, there is a nip in the air and the setting sun reflects red, pink and gold off the windows in the Gilford hills. Then home to a warm fire in the fireplace.

Leaving West Bear Island, past the maildock, head towards Long Island and spend the entire day meandering all the way up to Lees Mills. It was always such a great adventure. I haven't taken that trip since I was 10 or so. Does it really take all day? It sure felt like it. Used to love going through the Graveyard. Always imagined sunken ships and pirate skeletons hanging out and haunting the lake there.

Go by Lees Mills all the way up into Greens Basin. Its even further but a very nice ride. It could take all day if you want it to or you can do it quicker if you want. Either way its still a long ride.

Then: 7AM, the lake is smooth as glass, my father, grandfather and brother, going to get the morning paper at the Weirs.

Now: Sunday night, around sunset, most boats have left, trip around Bear and Mark Island with the kids up in the bow, wind blowing in our hair.

I think any ride on the lake is a favorite of mine. I even like going to get gas or getting rid of the trash. From generation to generation its like that with us (as I'm sure it is for most Winni folk). Whether its picking company up or dropping them off (hallelujah!!) we make a big deal out of it.

I took a ride out to the eastern side of the Broads before sunrise Saturday morning. Around Cow Island. Mars was just spectacular over the horzon. I have never seen anything so red. That was the best boat ride ever. The lake was so silent and quiet, with a little mist rolling over the water. Have anyone able to see Mars? :rolleye2:

I used to work for the camps on Bear Island driving the Bear. My favorite ride was doing the late evening boat to pickup staff coming back to the island. I would take the run by myself and just cruise along checking out the stars through the open hatch in the roof and enjoying the empty lake. I was a really relaxing ride.
