propane prices right now

Wondered what people are paying propane for home heating this December. I just paid $2.06/gallon from Eastern Propane. Last Jan. I paid $1.60/gallon, and additional deliveries later in winter and early spring was in the $1.70-1.90 range. Curious if others are seeing $2/gallon deliveries in December this year.
For context, I buy about 750 gallons per year for heating, cooking and dryer. I don't belong to the coop because I thought I was doing as well as them with pricing but now not so sure.

OTEA price for 2017 to 2018 through Eastern Propane for the 750 gallon useage range was $1.84 per gallon. That was for contracts entered into this Summer.

I agree. 2.06 is very high. It’s a little late but try to shop around. I have alway found Eastern to be on the high end of pricing.

Does anyone use Amerigas/Energy North and if so, have you found them to be anywhere close to these prices that others are quoting? I have them but am paying much closer to the quoted market rates by the state. I called them but they didn't budge. Am I just a loser?

We use less than 400 gallons per year. I just got 108 gallons delivered at $3.40 from Irving! They claim the 0-500 gal/year is an expensive tier! You think?

You are not a loser; you are just dealing with AmeriGas/Energy North. I used them for over 25 years, until this heating season. Same experience, they would not budge. I told them that if they did not meet the OTEA price, I would switch; they said we do not negotiate, take it or leave it, so I left. I have an underground tank, so it was a pain to make the switch to Rymes since AmeriGas/Energy North took their sweet time in transferring ownership of the tank.

Not a loser at all. I am with them as well and it's like pulling teeth with pricing. We use between 600 to 800 gallons a year and do their pre-buy and their still a lot more expensive than the OTEA pricing. I have one of their tanks so I am reluctant to switch but should do so.

It's really very easy to switch even if they own the tank. It's just a little paperwork but the transition is smooth. Remember they do it all the time.

In my experience changing propane suppliers is much easier if you have above ground tanks. If your existing supplier owns an underground tank, the process involves making sure that the existing supplier will transfer ownership of the underground tank to the new supplier. In my case, that involved a test of the tank by the new supplier and a long wait and some angry calls to the existing supplier before the transfer was done. Above ground tanks have an easier solution if the tank transfer process becomes difficult. Disconnect the old tanks and replace with new ones. Not very practical with a large underground tank.

So is Eastern Propane the OTA supplier of propane in Moultonborough? We have an underground tank that is ten years old. Curious as to what happens when I call EP this spring and say I am switching to OTA. If they are the supplier anyway, do they charge me anything for the tank? Would appreciate how to go about this switch. In previous years the EP price has been very competitive if not better than OTA fixed price but apparently not this year. Any thoughts on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Mishman. As I understand it, Eastern is the OTEA supplier for Moultonborough. My recollection is that there may be a charge from Eastern for an underground tank but that may vary or disappear based on gallonage. If Eastern owns the tank now, perhaps there is no issue. I would contact OTEA and Eastern. I ended going with Rymes and not Eastern, but got the OTEA price and no charge for the tank.

Mishman, we had Eastern for our propane, but didn't belong to OTEA. We joined them a few years back and then called Eastern and gave them our OTEA number. The next delivery, we had the reduced price for being an OTEA member.

It was that easy.
