I am a journalist writing about Lake Winnipesaukee...and I'm hoping to find out about the visits of certain famous people--namely Sophia Loren, Bob Dole, Prince Albert, Grace Kelly, and Drew Barrymore. Does anyone know when these individuals visited Winnipesaukee and what they did there? And do you know where I might find photos or news writeups?

Thanks!

Bill

I recall seeing snippets that include Lloyd Bridges, Count Basie, President Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Fonda and I believe Katharine Hepburn, since part of On Golden Pind was filmed here. Mitt Romney, Fritz Weatherbee, Brad Garret, and Jerry Remy to name a few.

This list includes sightings, frequent visitors and those that live here. It's from the forum archives (2003).

Prince Albert II was a camp attendee and the counsellor at Camp Tecumseh in Moultonborough. That would have been when he was somewhere in the child to teen years.

Seth and Eloise Armen were owners of Steamboat Island for many years and they also owned The Lakes Region Playhouse. On more than one occasion they would be host to actors coming to the playhouse for summer theater. Many famous people visited and had residences in Wolfeboro. Madame Chiang Kai-shek had a residence people referred to as "The Chinese Embassy". The boat she owned Alalou II is now "Miss Meredith" . Check with Wolfeboro Historical Society and I am sure you will find more info. Good luck.

Way back when I was a counsellor at Camp Idlewild, a friend and I had a small outboard skiff and we spent a day off putting around the lake. We forgot only one thing - refilling the fuel tank! We ran out of gas next to Nipple Rock. After about a half hour trying to flag down some help, we finally got some from a very nice, old woody with around 8 folks on board. They towed us into Silver Sands. Upon thanking them, we finally got a good look at who was aboard - the cast at the Playhouse including Myrna Loi. We were so surprised that we didn't even think of getting autographs. We got gas and continued our explorings.

Debra was married to Madame Chiang Kai-Shek's nephew, Ling C. Kung. The home was known as Spruce Acres in Wolfeboro. My Grandparents were the caretakers at Spruce Acres in the 60's. I remember visiting the house many times as a kid. Unfortunately it no longer stands today.

Back in the sixties my family vacationed at the Holiday bay cottages (or whatever they were called back then) on Paugus bay. At the resort next to us (Christmas island?), Jayne Mansfield was staying with her husband and crew including body guards. I think she was performing at the playhouse. I remember her and her husband with guards all piling into row boats in their Sunday best with her little dog for a trip on the bay. The whole event was hilarious as they tried to stay dry and manage the dog. My sister and I laughed ourselves to sleep that night.

Of the Boston Bruins in the early 70's rented the cottage next to us on the Walmart side of the lake. He would have multiple beer parties with fellow team mates. I remember the beautiful women, the beer flowing and the skinny dipping in the lake! Those were the days!

Worked at the Melvin Village General Store (Geeze Louise now) in early 1970's and while visiting Bald Peak, Princess Grace would do some grocery shopping there. She was treated as "regular folk" and would leave with one or two bags. I would cheerfully carry them to her car as I was swooning over her beauty.

Went scuba diving with the local dive club. i remember very well because I had just become certified and was my first time out with the club. Keene's shop was on Paugus bay. Thanks for that clarification Major. My memories are a bit hazy from that time (it was the sixties you know). Sounds right as Christmas Island is not adjacent to Holiday Bay. What's in the place of Sweetwoods now?

Obviously the biggest thing to ever happen was filming On Golden Pond back in about 1980. Set on Squam but the actors were seen all over Center Harbor since they were staying at the Mead Farm on Center Harbor Neck

My parents both worked at Mead Farm part time and struck up a friendship with a number of the cast and crew.

The opening sequence for the TV show Newart shows a car driving in the area and from what I remember this scene was some B roll for Golden Pond that was never used in the movie. Henry Fonda is in the car seen here making the turn in Center Sandwich

Georges Benjamin Clemenceau, nick- named "Le Tigre" (The Tiger) (1841 –1929), was said to have visited the lake region in June of 1869. Clemenceau served as the Prime Minister of France from 1906 to 1909, and again from 1917 to 1920. Leading France for most of the final years of World War I, he was one of the principal architects of the Treaty of Versailles.

It was a night we all looked forward to before going back home to Bahstun for September. The Parents took us out to the Arlberg for dinner. Must have been 15 or 16 years old, suddenly the dining area got real quiet, and then in prances in good ole Captain Kirk.
William Shatner was seated at a table with an absolute knockout woman. Hard to continue with dinner, but we all got the look to behave and respect peoples privacy. Maybe they were picking blueberries on Belknap! Camping??? Smug!

This compound was bought and razed by the CEO of Stanley Tools in the mid to late 90s. He built a beautiful home/compound of his own. This guy had so much influence, he made the pwc company of his choice offer their product at Goodhue & Hawkins Boatyard (Wolfeboro) even though the territory of the product was geographically protected (dealers not too close to one another).

The president of France (Sarkovsky at the time?) rented a place on the lake. He had a huge amount of security as I recall. I think there were a few interesting stories at that time.

Yes there were and many pictures at the time. I have shared many stories about the President of France Sarkovsky while vacationing here in Wolfeboro.

I remember photos taken of him shaking his fist at news photographers who (in his opinion) got too close to his boat!

It was Nolan D. Archibald- Chairman of the Board, CEO and president of Black & Decker. My research shows that Stanley and B&D didn't merge until 2010. his pwc of choice- Yamaha!

I wonder if the OP ever wrote his article? It's almost the one year anniversary of this thread.

Bob Montana, the man who created Archie and the gang owned the house on Windswept Island just off Cow. After his untimely death from a heart attack, the house went for sale in 2016.

We used to go to Harilsa's when we were kids and buy the comics each week and read them over and over and over again during rainy days on Cow Island. Some of my best memories.

Would Benning Wentworth count? The Harvard grad was the New Hampshire governor back in '41. 1741, that is...

My mom just reminded me of a time when we were at the old Paugus Diner and Vincent Price and Claude Raines were in the next booth. I don't remember because I was probably about 10 at the time.

I bet that was common since the playhouse is right up the street.

Claude Raines owned a home in Sandwich & is buried in a nearby cemetery. His home was across from the old post office.

I maybe dating myself, but a friend stayed at Ames Farm years ago, and Franchot Tone was the name before his in the register. All the chambermaids were swooning.
