Dogs have been getting ear infections from swimming in the lake. Some really bsad cases my dog got it.

watch for red spots on your dogs ear or if her/him ear smells. :(

I guess it's possible for a dog to get duck itch, right? I understand it's been really bad this year. As soon as he/she get out of the water, I would wipe him/her down -ears and all. My dog never got "the itch" maybe because we wiped her down and then she would roll all over the sand. Good luck, I'm sure it's very painful.

My Golden Retriever is notorious for getting yeast infections in his ears after he goes swimming. I make sure I clean his ears with Epi-Otic after he swims, and once a week regardless of swimming or not. I also give him Benadryl - 50 mg twice a day during hot season, cutting back to 25 mg twice a day during the winter - to dry him out. His infections have been greatly decreased since I started doing this.

Good luck...nothing like a dog with an ear infection shaking his head and rattling his tags all night because his ear(s) is(are) bothering him.

Nothing like drying the dog completely, having her roll in the sand, then having her run back in the water for more fun and start all over again. But she loves it and at 14 she acts like a puppy again.

We're battling a particularly tough one with our Golden right now -- one that he developed before getting into the Lake in early July, and which has only gotten worse. We already shaved him to avoid hot spots, but this year the culprit seems to be recurring/chronic ear infection. Don't know HOW we'll keep him out of the Lake when we return -- he's an incurable Lake addict.

I know this is changing direction a little but my 14 yr. old son who hasn't had an ear infection since he was 8 has a raging infection now after a 10 days of swimming in the lake! At first I thought it might be swimmers ear but the Dr. said he no..it was a bad infection. My kids and all the cousins have had duck itch at some point during the last 2 weeks of being at the lake. It seemed to be worse a few weeks ago and has now dwindled down to maybe a new spot or 2 a day. Maybe it's because us parents have been diligent about rinsing off and toweling after they get out. Who knows what's going on.
