We were going through the channel that's between Bear Island and Shep Brown's Sunday night around 8 p.m. There was a boat in the opening of the channel just kind of sitting there and we couldn't figure out why they were basically blocking the exit/entrance. As we got closer we saw why..a deer was swimming from the Shep's side over to Bear Is. and this boat was protecting it from traffic. What an amazing sight to see, this creature swimming, just it's little brown head sticking up from the water. It even knew were to get on to shore and we were waiting to see if it would shake off the excess water like our dog does  ..but it just scrambled up the embanking and sauntered off w/out a care in the world. Thanks to that boater for seeing this beautiful creature and protecting it best they could. That is what Lake Winnipesaukee is all about!

That was a very smart thing to protect it from boaters that might not see it.I'm sure the deer wasn't very happy about the odd floating object following it to shore though.Nice job!

Not only are the large furry animals good swimmers, but they are also smarter than one may have assumed. Every year on the first day of bear hunting season, there's always a large grunt of black bears that swim over to Bear Island where hunting is banned and totally off-limits and not allowed by the state. Historilogically, that's why Bear Island got its' name!
