This is the Official 2017 Ice-Out Thread. If you reply to this thread all of the information about this year's ice-out will be easily accessible to our forum friends.
I thought this thread was early last year on March 1 and here we are on February 27 watching the ice go out. The ice in front of my house on the broad side of Rattlesnake Island looks uneven and punky.
Post your observations, concerns, pictures and whatever else comes to mind re: ice-out. We love your pictures!
The Ice-Out page is up at http://www.rattlesnakecam.com/watch.htm.
There you will find all of the Winnipesaukee WebCams to watch the ice melt as well as links to special ice out features such as Saunder's Bay daily picture with information about previous year's ice out. (I will post link when it is available.)
Ice-out has occurred in recent years when the lake temperature is from 39-41 degrees as reported by the Winnipesaukee Dataphone at the Lakeport Dam. Today the temp is 35 degrees. (it was 38 on March 1 last year)
Let's get on with our favorite activity ... Ice-Out!

Tomorrow and Thursday should cause some serious damage to the ice on the lake. Between the rain, the 60 degree temperature and the high winds, this is a perfect recipe to erase a lot of ice! Lets just hope the winds don't raise havoc with anyone's dock!

Anyone have a reliable way to get the water temperature? In the past, the water temperature has been a good indicator of impending ice-out. Once it went over 38 degrees, ice-out was usually shortly thereafter.

I call the Winnipesaukee Data Phone. They report several data points including the Lake Temperature. I post that from time to time at www.rattlesnakecam.com/watch.htm (http://www.rattlesnakecam.com/watch.htm).
I use this because it is what has been used for many years. Yesterday and todays temp was 37. The previous two days were 35, then 36. My recollection is that ice out happens at 39 or warmer.
603-527-0071 The lake temp is the last data point he reads right after the precipitaition.

I would say we should be thickening the ice up over the next few days especially Fri-Sun highs teens/twenties, lows near zero.. The bays must still have good ice, it was definitely much better than last year

I was very bored so I took a look at the 130 ice out dates and I came up with some interesting observations.
Not in any particular order
Over the 130 years the average ice out is April 19th.
The earliest ice out was in 2016 which occurred on March 18th
The latest ice out was on 12 May in 1888
Ice out has occurred in March 5 times ( three of them in the last 7 years)
Ice out has occurred in May 13 times, the most recent was in 2001
Ice out normally occurs in April, 112 times
The latest ice out average for any ten-year period was the first ten years’ records were kept when it averaged ice out on April 26th.
The earliest ice out average for any ten-year period is the last ten years when it has averaged ice out on April 11th.
The latest ice out average for any twenty-year period was the first twenty years’ records were kept when it averaged ice out on April 23rd
The earliest ice out average for any twenty-year period is the last twenty years when it has averaged ice out on April 13th.
The all-time average ice out over 130 year is 19 April
From 1888 to 1959 ice out average was on 19 April
Since 1950 the ice out average is on 18 april
Since 1960 the ice out average was on 18 April
Since 1970 ice out average was on 17 April
Since 1980 ice out average was on 15 April
Since 1990 ice out average was on 14 April
Since 2000 ice out average was on 13 April
Since 2010 out ice average was on 8 April
2 times in the last 3 years, ice out has been later than the 19th of April the 130 year average. The other year was the earliest ice out ever.
Not that it has anything to do with Lake Winne, but the ice on my farm pond in Northern Mass went out on Feb 27th last year which was the earliest I ever remember in the last 6o years This year it was out on Feb 26th

This is the view from the top of Gunstock Mountain yesterday afternoon. Not shown, the south end of Rattlesnake was open all the way to Ship and Moose Islands. In my humble opinion, that is crazy as there is still a ton of ice west of rattlesnake that could very easily and will eventually get blown in that direction possibly locking them in. I have been watching the ice flows all week from my home heading east some are huge!

3/10/17 @5:10p. Ice as far as the eye can see.
It's only +1 deg. here this morning but we have very strong, gusty wind out of the northwest. We're beginning to see some small areas of open water between the mainland (between Minge Cove and Smalls Cove) and Sleepers Island. Even those small areas of open water have whitecaps today, which eat away at the ice. Today's wind is no doubt putting intense pressure on the ice in this area. If that results in some major stress cracks, the wind could push it all to the southeast as we saw in Island Girl's excellent video of the ice going out on the Broads a few days ago.
You can watch this area of the lake change on the Echo Shores Webcam: http://echoshorescam.com/

Agreed. Ice out is a long way off for the coves. Even the coves are not in Mt Washington's cruise there are important to those who would like to get to there properties in a early ice out.
For example, it was reported by local neighbors in 19 Mile Bay that there is still 18" of ice. And what happens with the ice when a major Northeaster dumps 2' of snow. I would expect it would be very difficult to snowmobile or even walk on the ice with water and slush below the snow. Our prediction for Ice out at 19 mile bay will be later than April 5th Reporting from Sarasota Florida.

Based on the current forecast, it's looking to me like it will be a fairly "normal" ice-out. I.e., early to mid-April, slow and steady.
Solar gain at this time of year is strong, and temps during the days are usually above freezing. But the nights still drop into the 20's. So you get some melting during the day, and some cool down at night. But the water temp continues to slowly rise, and when it reaches 38-39, the melting from below takes over and it all breaks up.
Baring a drastic change in the weather pattern, about 3 more weeks.

We flew Ice Patrol again today- no matter what it looks like from the shore, there is still a LOT of ice- and much of it where it re-froze. We'll have a full report as well as many new photos on our Ice-Out.com site by the weekend.
Also had fun doing a Facebook LIVE video broadcast from the plane! Pretty sure that's never been done before. While it did not come out great, it showed that there may be the possibility of a LIVE Ice-Out announcement when it happens!

Will that hinder ice out more?
I doubt it. The next week is going to be in the 40s every day with some rain. As the snow on top melts it's just going to drop more water on top of the ice. The top will get slushy, it probably won't be cold long enough for it to add more frozen surface to the top.
We do have some wind coming with the storm. That will also get stuff moving. We have a few weeks to go with or without the storm.

Ice behind dock melting nicely today. Lots of open water on North side of Welch. Water temp must be rising or maybe the onshore wind pushing warmer surface water into Welch. Yesterday's snow melting quickly too. We need some 40-50 degree days.

Well maybe not, drove in today and there were no tracks in the snow indicating a boat launch since the April fools day snow. There is a small circle at the end where a 4WD vehicle could turn with a short trailer and back to the water. Then pulling away from the water maybe parking for four vehicles with short trailers or park out on the road.

Hi Mike - all cams are in working order but it has been a very odd ice-out around Bear/Pine. It is still ice between Shep's and Bear, but definitely softening and with the pouring rain tonight it should be going quickly... The channel between Y-Landing and Pine is mostly open, and you could possibly scoot around the south side of Pine to open water on the north side of Bear...
As of last Sunday Alton Bay was still completely iced-over with melting around the shoreline/docks.
I have been doing my "melt dance", it's not pretty but it's working! -PIG

First off for codeman: Glendale is locked up pretty solid, I think it's going to be another 10 days in there.
We launched our fishing boat from Ellacoya this morning and fished the broads and up and around the east side of Welch. Mostly all open water in this area. There must have been a lot of ice breaking up yesterday because a huge raft of broken brash ice floated past our place heading out into the broads. Most of it has cleared by this morning but our shoreline and breakwater is surrounded by chunks, slush, etc. I suspect this was some of the remaining ice on the West side of Welch. Sunny and warm today. Should see more progress.

Being the only idiot on Bear Island on a beautiful 85 degree day, PRICELESS!
Ice report, what I went through had no structure to it, just ice tubes and maybe 2-3 inches in length. Ice line as I was leaving was as follows, to the north between 3 mile and the beavers then to black cat. All clear to right about six mile blocking access to the LI bridge then from what I could see opens back up 3/4 the way down LI and over towards Welch. Between Pine and shore was clear to where it opens up between bear and shore. What ice is there (what I pushed through) just needs wind to clear it out. Ice has receded about 1/4 the way out from Bear and there are large breaks here and there of open water. About half way between sheps and cattle it opens up again all the way down past cattle and into the open area beyond the narrows there.
It won't be long however some areas do look like there is still even after all this warmth still bright white ice.
Meredith bay looks ready to go at least the first 1/3 of it very dark almost black, the ice does turn to a lighter grey looking down towards weirs.
Water temp on the fish finder was 38 degrees.

A little tidbit...the condition of the ice you describe is called "Candle Ice" as it looks like thousands of little candles vertically stacked together. In a slight breeze they rub together making a tinkling sound. It's cool to actually hear it happen.

Based on the pictures and great report....it seems "marginally safe" to launch from Sheps as of yesterday (is that accurate)? I am hoping to launch my 1875 Lund on Friday morning. Please provide any updates if anyone else is in the area today or tomorrow.
Of course if ice blows in from the south....it could lock everything up quickly with drifting ice. I'm hoping winds from the north will blow ice out toward Cattle Landing.

Yes that's accurate....hard to predict exactly what you'll find I was lucky yesterday in that there wasn't much in the way of wind so coming back after being out on the island all day conditions didn't really change from an ice flow perspective a whole lot so the return trip was easy enough but I will admit I was prepared to be marooned for a few days if need be.
If I were you I'd say go for it even if there is some ice out there it's disappearing fast. If you find the need to push through any ice pick your path carefully and creep through it. I had no problem going as fast as my outboard idles in gear occasionally using my paddle to push a solid piece out of the way. I do agree wind from the SE could be a far bigger problem than from the NW.
Good luck and I hope you get out there.

Minge is still somewhat iced in. A lot has melted today all around the lake. We plan on putting the boat in the water Saturday if that ice you see melts. I do not want the wind to pick up and have icebergs crash into my boat. There is a lot of ice at the southern end of the lake. Once that breaks up, if there is a wind from the SE give or take a few degrees, that will come rushing past Rattlesnake and smash into anything in its way. We are hoping for an overnight, but not if there is the chance of damage to the boat. Andrew's Marine Service website has a new image every day. This is from April 12. That is a thick chunk of ice there!

Planning to hit Rattlesnake Saturday, does anyone know how the landing or minge looks? We've busted through ice before and we'll do it again :D
Here's to getting back to some lake time !!!

Ice out caller, Emerson Aviation, just had an interview a minute ago with Mike Haddad of WMUR and he predicted "official" ice out would be on Wednesday or Thursday of next week...

Surprised you didn't catch me out there picking my way through all that in the boat. Probably would have had to add the caption, look at that knucklehead!
Looks a lot more ominous from the air.

Awesome shot!

Flyguy's aerials are important to seeing what parts of the lake are still iced in as well as the color of the ice. Please go to his site to donate money so he can go up more often. Airplane fuel is not cheap. flyguy, what does the fuel cost for each flight? This would help our generous viewers understand how much to donate.
I am always amazed how much the lake changes in a day and would love more frequent images.

All open water from Smith Point to south side of Rattlesnake except in the 2 corners on either side of the "thumb". Cannot see the landing but it was almost out Tuesday so with the wind today should be clear by weekend
Drove to lake today and took some pics. hopefully they attach. Having difficulty with Explorer

Wide open at Shep's today thanks to a strong wind blowing down the channel from the north. Could see ice further south, guessing about the end of Bear.
Nice to be out on the island! PIG

As MAXUM pointed out a south wind could change things, and sure enough the ice has blown back in. However just saw a fishing boat plow through it easily, so assume it is "candle ice".

I went to Cow Is. yesterday in A.M. .Orchard ove was still ied in so walked the shore to 110 --112--113 area and all was good with no damage to my place and neighbors either. Good Day and Dock is together. Hope water level does not come way up so decking floats away a it did many years ago.. Seems to be almost full lake!. Enjoy the weather. Kerk

We finally got out to Welch late yesterday when the ice in the end of Smith Cove finally gave way. Great to be here, very nice calm morning today prior to the wind kicking up a bit. Riding around Welch no sign of ice except in the small cove by Winter Harbor Yacht club. I was surprised that we saw no floating debris however we keep a lookout at modest speed.

Thanks, we like it a lot. Dave Ewing found it for us. Of course we had been looking at ishoot308's boat some 300' away for a while prior to that. An Eastern makes a great island boat.

I started in Alton Bay this morning but was champing at the bit to check out the area from the six pack down to barber pole. Went past barber pole only about 1/2 mile before I could see the entire bay there to Hole in the Wall was still iced in. I will probably be clear by next weekend though.

The ice currently in the area of the Grave Yard and 19 Mile Bay will prevent the Mt from making her little known port of Lees Mills

Anybody know if Morrison Cove(near Long Island) is clear.
I can't see all the way in, but from across the way the south end is clear, as is the whole area between the bridge and six-pack, which went out yesterday in the breeze. Today is breezy, coming more or less into the cove, so I can't imagine there is anything left further in. HTH

Has anyone tried travelling from Barbers Pole to Melvin. Is it still iced in?
