Trout with a tumor

Vertical jigging on north side of Bear Island my friend and I caught 3 lake trout at about 100 feet. 12314

When we opened the trout we found a firm solid tumor in the midline, outside the abdominal cavity.

Has anyone found something similar?
Would you have eaten the fish? the tumor? or would you have deep sixed it for other creatures to consume?

I found an article describing a fibroma in a brown trout in 1936, but haven't found much more information

Well I certainly wouldn't of eaten it! Leave it on shore for mother nature to take care of or the local eagle population would certainly make short order of it!

I have seen some strange disfigurements in fish I have caught. Usually caused by some kind of parasite when they are very young.

I would send the pic to Fish and Game biologist John Viar for his take on it. John.Viar@wildlife.nh.gov John is usually very good at responding.

If you think it's not safe to consume yourself, maybe it's best to put it in the trash and protect the eagles too?

Well I don't eat them even in perfect shape. I personally can't stand them no matter how many different ways I have tried to cook them. I just like catching them!

I think an Eagles digestive system can handle a lot more than we can. Have you ever seen any of the eagle cams with fish that have been in their nest for days covered with fly's and lord knows what else! They and their young still munch away at it with no issue.

Yuck...I wouldn't have eaten that either...we did, however enjoy the salmon I caught recently, and also the smallmouth filets. Both were yummy!
