fishmarket or gourmet food takeout?

Hi everyone- We rented a house for fourth of July week on Tuftonboro neck on Winter Harbor. Our first time on the Lake and we are so excited. Does anyone know of a great fresh fish market close to us? Anything in Wolfeboro? Also, are there any great little gourmet take-out food shops in the area? Also, where is a grocery store nearby? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Your best bet for fresh seafood is Bart's Seafood on Route 109 in Moultonborough. When you come off the neck, go left and follow rt. 109 into Moultonborough. I'm guessing its about 6 miles on the right, somewhere near Bucky's Tavern. Wolfeboro has two grocery stores. Hunter's IGA in the center of Town on the Main St. and DeVylders on Rt. 109 just north of the center in Wolfeboro Falls. My preference is Hunter's, it is slightly smaller than DeVylders but it is jam packed and has just about everything you need.

LCookster, so glad you’ll be up @ the lake for the fourth. Where on Tuftonboro Neck? Our place is on Winter Harbor Way so you are probably pretty close. In terms of grocery stores there are two in Wolfeboro. I am partial to DyVylders Farm Market. To get there you make the turn at the top Main Street between two gas stations. One is a Sunoco and I believe the other is a Citgo. DeVylder’s is on your left in a small strip mall of stores. Your other option is also close to the top of the Main Street Hill. When coming into town and heading toward Tuftonboro, Hunter’s IGA is on your right. Both are full service grocery stores but small. You just have to get used to them not being “Supermarkets” but I have never had a problem being able to get what I needed.

Since you will be in Tuftonboro, there is also a large stock convenience store @ 19 mile bay. To get there, you will take the Tuftonboro neck road as if you were returning to Wolfeboro, but instead of turning south on Rt. 109, you will turn North. (Left at the small white church). Follow 109 North for about 3 miles and the store is on your right. You will find just about anything you need in a pinch and it’s more convenient than running the whole way into town.

For fish markets, both grocery stores have fresh fish and lobsters. I have gotten very nice fish at both places. I would also highly suggest checking out the Wolfecatch fish market. They have fresh fish daily and I have always really enjoyed the stuff that I have gotten there. Wolfecatch is located @ 31 Bay Street in Wolfeboro. If you are coming from your place in Tuftonboro, you will make a left onto Mill Street just before getting into the heart of downtown Wolfeboro. Follow Mill Street to Bay Street and you will see signs. They also have a great waterfront restaurant.

For gourmet takeout, I am a little less familiar. Not too many places would be considered gourmet around the lake. If you are looking for a gourmet meal, you might want to check out the Woodshed restaurant. It is about 20 minutes north on Rt 109. For nice takeout salads and things like that, give the Full Belly Deli a try. They have nice salads and might do other catering type things. Hope this is all a help. Welcome to the Lake!!

Bart's in the place for the raw materials, but the gourmet part is up to you.

Don't know what impact the red tide has had on quantity, quality or prices, but I'd imagine it's hurt all three.

Thank you all for your quick reply! Frdxplorer, our rental house is on Boycroft Road. I see you are from York, Pa. I was born and raised in Pa and for a time as a child lived in Lancaster. I am very excited about our vacation. I had posted some questions on the Boating board and got some excellent advice. You folks are really making us feel welcome! Thanks again for all the tips.

If you want gourmet take-out, check out Mis-en Place (sp?). Take a left just before Hunters (after the Post Office). Follow the road. The road takes a sharp right. The restaraunt is just up the road on the left.

KPW is exactly right on all fronts. Mis en place is a great suggestion. I often forget to think about it given it's off the main street location. But a great place.

If you want fresh, gotta go to Captain Barts. Fish and lobsters are brought in daily and his prices are cheap. They are right after the intersection of Rt109 and 171 (Castle in the Clouds) on the right if you're coming from Tuftonboro.
He is open Wednesday thru Sunday. Check the local papers for the hours. Wednesday and Friday he is not open until 4 PM as the truck travels to pick up the seafood. Friday is 4-6 PM, Saturday is 11 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday is noon to 4PM. Not sure about Wednesday and Thursday as he is just starting those hours this week.
