We installed a butcher block island at camp some years ago, liked it so much we did the same at home. Also have BB between the stove and sink. BB is timeless but a lot more expensive than almost any other surface if you're getting into custom work.

Sorry, the GC made the arrangements , so I can't make a specific recommendation, other than to suggest checking with kitchen designers. Don't be afraid to ask to see a finished project, not just pictures. Most people will be happy to have the designer come show off the finished project.

I have some butcher block. Yes, it is nice and it is expensive.

I also have laminate (Formica is a brand name).
I prefer the laminate for its low cost and durability. And the hundreds of colors. Plus there are many different edges to choose from.

The place that manufactures most if not all of the laminate countertops around the Lakes Region is located across from Burger King at Exit 20 off 93. Not open to the public but I have been there.

You can order a custom laminate from any lumber yard.

You would need to hire any carpenter and/or contractor to install. Normally, you pick out the laminate color/pattern, give it to carpenter/contractor, he/she will order countertop and sub contract the plumbing.
