This year's Rotary Spring Derby has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. It was scheduled for May 13-15. I think its too bad for some of the businesses who depend on it for revenue, but as a local everyday fisherman I am not at all upset. For the many families that used it as a way of getting together for some fishing, why should it change anything? See you all soon on the water..........AKA The Freshguy

They held the ice fishing derby with incredibly dangerous conditions, but cancel the open water tournament? It seems like the Rotary needs new leadership.
At then of the day the result of a low turnout ice fishing tournament in combination with the cancelation of the open water tournament will have a positive impact on the fishery. I also won't miss the tournament.

You do realize it's two different organizations that put on the winter and spring derby right??
According to the article in the union leader, the spring derby is being cancelled because of health issues with the main personnel involved....

Unless I read it wrong, it wasn't "personnel", it was a person.
"Personnel" is a group of people.

From the Union Leader on March 11th, which is where I saw the info first...

It says due to medical issues with some of the organizers...
A little inconsistency here in the official info...but no biggy.
Bottom line, it's suspended, or cancelled, depending on the article for this year. :)

“Due to medical issues with some of the organizers, we’ve decided to suspend the Derby,” she told the Union Leader.

Thanks for posting this and no it isn't a "biggy".
This (http://www.wmur.com/news/winni-derby-fishing-competition-cancelled/38499914) is where I read that it was one individual and what it said:
“One of the organizers, who has been incredibly instrumental in making the derby happen, is experiencing some medical issues, so we are not able to put on an event that is the caliber of what people have experienced in the past,” said Kristen Welch of the Rotary Club.

i can't say i'm terribly sad either, but i was planning to fish it this year for the first time ever. oh well..
i recall some years back when they cancelled it, it was the best salmon season i've ever had. 20-30 fish every trip. haven't had one like that since.

It's also possible the statement was given as "some" to avoid needless attention on any one person who might be wanting a little privacy right now.

I didn't realize that another news article stated more than one was sick.
I read one person was sick and you read more than one.
I should have just ignored it.
Wow that is news. Like many of you, I'm not that sad it won't happen. After a dismal season with no snowmobiling and limited ice fishing I do feel a touch bad for the local retailers who certainly didn't have a great winter.

my understanding is that the central person organizing the event (who took over Rick Davis' role) is very sick and the organizing group could not get anyone to take that role. With decreasing participation and sponsorship dropping, I think this event is going the way of the dinosaur.
While I agree that this and the drop in ice fishing on the lake this year will both have very positive impact on the fishery this year...I love the event and look forward to it every Spring. I'm sure retailers in the region will feel the impact but if that impact was very severe...I would expect that this group would have stepped up to make sure the event ran.
