This is the Official 2016 Ice-in Thread. Please post your
comments about this year's Ice-in here. This has been a very warm fall and winter so far and the lake temperatures have reflected that.
It is typically 33-35 degrees at the Weirs when the broads skims over. The Lake temp as of this morning, reported by the Winnipesaukee Dataphone is 35 degrees. (1-18-2015) The forecast this week is for very cold temperatures but lots of wind. Friday night, January 22 looks to be the calmest all week.
There is ice in Moultonborough Bay and in some of the coves.
The Ice-in page (http://www.rattlesnakecam.com/icein.htm) is live www.rattlesnakecam.com/icein.htm (http://www.rattlesnakecam.com/icein.htm). If you have a webcam or know of one, please post the information in this thread and I will add it to the page. If you have a webcam that I have in the defunct section of the ice in page, please post here if it will be coming back at some point.
For those of us who are addicted to watching the lake freeze, enjoy. If you are new to the lake, come back often and watch the progress of Ice-in!
Please visit this thread for the latest news and the Ice-in (http://www.rattlesnakecam.com/icein.htm) page for current images of the freezing progress. (Please click on the ads at webcam sites and support the sponsors. This provides revenue to keep the cams alive)
As always Please post your pics of the freezing lake here.
See you on the ice!

PS: ( some of my links to cams are not working. I hope to fix this in the next couple of days)

Not sure of the thickness but it has been capped over for a few weeks. There are 2 bob houses there as of yesterday.

Airport manager for the Alton Bay Ice Runway is reporting around 4-7 inches of ice in the runway / parking areas, and that it is very variable. Still hoping that we will get the 12 inches needed to open the runway.

Interesting article in the Union Leader that claims that there was no ice-in in 2001. That's not my recollection since that was the first year we had an Ice-Out contest and there was a winner.

The part of all these articles and posts that I don't understand is the whole concept of "Ice-In". In all my years in the area, I never heard of anyone who can define the criteria for it, nor has it really been needed. People usually don't worry about it if they can use the lake ice the way they like (bob houses, runways, sled riding, etc), even if large sections of the Broads are open or very thin.
While the definition of Ice-Out is relatively clear, per the referenced article, has Dave Emerson ever really declared "Ice-In"?

I get that. Ice-In can't really be declared, but I just think of it as a clever way to track the ice conditions around the lake. Some people that don't live locally may want to know before making the drive up only to find out it's not safe to be out there.
My definition would be the direct opposite of ice out, when the Mt Washington would not be able to reach all its ports of call, ice in would be declared.

That's part of the issue. It this were used, Winni would have had "Ice-In" almost a month ago since there has been ice in Alton Bay for quite some time. But I think we would all agree that we are far from a normal "ice-in"
(FWIW - except for the eastern shore, Merrymeeting is mostly open too)

I wish there was a web cam offering a view of the southern end of Alton Bay. I remember Downings had one or two cams. Winnipesaukee cam looks north towards Little Mark but you wouldn't know the southern end was frozen looking at that. (maybe that cam is not updating although I see ice/snow on the dock))

The building next to the old Pavillion building that housed a real estate office who had a web cam, has now been bought by Morin Insurance. They had a webcam up and running that looked over the public docks in Alton Bay out towards Sandy Point. Nice in the winter to see all the action on the ice.
Unfortunately that webcam went down quite a while ago, and I did send a message to them, but did not get a reply.

I first looked at Snake Eyes this morning around 9 and all in its view was skimmed over. As the morning progressed, a stream of water widened until more that half the view was open water. Now, just before noon it all looks frozen again. My internal cams also display the front of my house as frozen. It is hard to tell if way out in the broads is frozen or liquid. It appears to be liquid, however, with a gray sky, this is difficult to tell. Perhaps Websatwinni can chime in here!

Just took a walk down to Ellacoya and all the ice in my above pics is completely gone...
I Was surprised to see that the town / state blocked access to the lake from the Elacoya ramp by plowing a huge wall of snow to not allow access 200 yds from the lake! I have never seen this done before as the parking area is very close to the lake at this ramp. Snowmobilers, cross country skiers, ice sail boats, ice fishermen, and anyone else who enjoys winter ice sports at this PUBLIC ramp is now limited! Your tax dollars at work!!....NOT! There is no logical reasoning for doing this... There were a couple of ice divers there who did not understand why the town/ state would do this...
My Polaris Ranger has plow... ;);););)

Thanks for the pictures, my camera is just a little bit north of your view but with the same objects, if I turn my head to the right . . .
An active saw mill was located on the east side where the new houses are being built. That is where the lumber came from in the 50's to build our dwellings, father/grandfather. When I was a kid in the early 70's we boated over to the mill in July, climbed on top of the massive saw dust pile to jump off, kids . . .
After a few jumps, moving a lot of saw dust, we found 12" inches of snow, remember, that is how they used to insulate lake ice for summer consumption.
Our first snow ball fight in July wearing bathing suits, the evidence melted before we got back to the west side.
Best part of the lake, remember it just like yesterday . . .
the north end is locked up pretty good with ice, a few bob houses have shown up and ready for the derby. Looking left is North.

On Monday ice had formed nicely and solid about 200 yards out from my camp on the west side of Welch. This morning when I checked my camera almost all of it was gone and by the end of the day I doubt any ice at all will be there. Temps for the next 7 or 8 days are near or well into the 40's. So much for ice...

Nice photo UP, we were thinking of Pine Mt AKA Alton Mt yesterday but did another hike.
That short hike up the Morse preserve has to be one of the best views of the lake to be had.
We decided after hiking up to the top, then taking the wide trail to the east of the top on the way down, stopping for a couple of sandwiches, and then continuing down to the parking lot, to do the Mike Burke Trail.
We headed out, and the last time we hiked the trail, it seemed to be a loop that went off the back of the parking lot, and then went into the woods, generally moving to the right, and ending up being an uphill climb back into the parking lot right by the road.
Well, we were following the blue "Public Trail" signs put out the Alton Conservation Committee, and the trail started a pretty good up hill and then moved to our left as we were hiking. It continued to climb, and move toward the South or Southwest. Finally it ran along a ridge, and then started a descent. Ah good. All of a sudden, the trail maker signs disappeared, and so we stopped. The tracks were had been following had split, and so we followed one trail to the left. Found one sign, then no more. Ok, plenty of daylight, and the old hiking adage: Follow the downhill, and follow the stream. I knew it would either take us to Avery Hill Road, or our original track. Ended up being the road, about a quarter mile east of the parking lot. Still a nice hike. They do need to mark the trail just a little better. Fun day.

I looked at a majority of the webcams this morning and would be very surprised if we did not have ice out by March 1st. The temperatures appear to be dropping to more "normal" levels next week, but the sun angle is so high at this time of year, that building ice is next to impossible without really cold weather. I live in southern NH and last year on this date it was -3F in the morning at my house with 32 inches of snow on the ground. Today it was 52 degrees and we have maybe 2 inches of ice on the ground. Unbelievable change.

I see you are open to ice out guesses and we haven't even had ice in, have we?????There is no official Ice-In but since the Mount could not get to all of its ports right now it is already unofficially Ice-In and Ice-Out could be called if everything opened up. That would mean absolutely no ice blocking any of the Mount's ports.
When the lake clears and Ice-Out is called it is very, very unlikely that ice would reform and block the Mount again. When parts of the lake first skim over it often is broken up by the wind and waves and doesn't freeze again until another calm and cold period. That makes calling an official Ice-In difficult. The Mount's route could be blocked one day and open the next.
The potential problem with the Ice-Out contest is if Ice-Out is declared in February while guesses are still being accepted. If that happened I would probably suspend the contest for this year. I'm not too worried about that happening. Some of the Mount's ports will still have ice at the end of February even if the broads are open.

The way things looked this morning, "ice in" should occur by this weekend!
I was pleasantly surprised when I woke up this morning and looked across the lake to see the broads fully locked up. The only dark water areas was a section on the West side of Welch island between Welch and Lockes island which is uncommon. I see no reason with the very cold weather we have coming up that ice in shouldn't occur by this weekend.
Here's a video clip showing the open area. Everything to the left (South side of Welch) and out in the broads is frozen over.

Correct :laugh:..... but if you watched the history channel you would better understand many more of the mysteries of Lake Winnipesaukee. Those space ships that are keeping the water warm are just picking up the gold mined by the Big-Foot's living underground. Seen it on TV and read it on the internet so it has to be true.

Well there would be a way to tell, that's by taken the temperature of the water at 3ft and comparing it to the Dam, I believe the water temperature is taken at 3ft below the surface. Not that I am at all interested in doing this but, if I did I would try the following. Surf casting fishing rod. a mid size bobber, and of course the proper thermometer strung about 3ft below the bobber. Get as close as possible to the area and go "fishing". If the temp is around 40 and Dam says the lake temp is 33, than you might have your answer.

PS: I remember the thread about the Navy "Presence" during WWII. Couldn't find that one either. Maybe I should re-tune my tinfoil HAT to another frequency...or something....:)

That was not the thread I was remembering. The thread i was thinking of had some photos of "Sasquatch" bounding across the landscape of Rattlesnake and ....It also might have been a vision of "Peter, Paul, and Mary"...someone else suggested it was another singing group from the time..I can't remember. :D NB
PS: I am of the correct age...but I was NOT at Woodstock (NY) in '69. :) :)

Actually the experiments were performed on the South side of Diamond Island.
All you ever want to know about those "secret" Naval underwater optical tests:

Definitely worth a scroll through... there are quite a few photos of the research facilities and equipment on the island. I will attach an excerpt from page 7 of the pdf.

It was calm and well below zero last night yet the hot tub remains quite open and unfrozen! With the impending long term warm up starting tomorrow, I see no way for ice in to happen this year...

I suggest everyone stop worrying about "Ice In". We've never had a clear definition anyway, and the "hot tub" area that everyone seems to be watching has stayed open all winter several times during the past decade.
As has been mentioned, you could argue that technically we had ice-in as soon as Alton, Wolfeboro, etc. had ice around the Mount docks. Technically, ice-in would be the inverse of ice out.
The more definitive measurement this year seems to be that many of the other coves and areas on the lake that are usually used for winter activities are also not safe, so more are noticing this year.
I would agree that with it now being mid-Feb with stronger sun rays, and a forecast of relatively warm days ahead, it's doubtful that the ice is going to be very usable this year.

Who's worrying??... It's called having a little fun between the boating season blues time frame.
Isn't this the "Official" Ice In Thread anyway that Island Girl starts every year?..., What else are we supposed to post about here?? Heck the webmaster made it a sticky post even... and here I am thinking I am helping people out who don't live near the lake but wish to visit for some winter activities and fun...well shame on me!

I didn't mean for my post to come across as cross :rolleye2:. Wasn't my intention.
Besides, it's a moot point. About 30 minutes after my post, our official ice declarer posted "Ice-In" anyway! https://www.facebook.com/131847876851023/videos/978647332171069/

YUP, That's the thread. Some cabin fever that winter. I think Argies Wife must have "removed" her picture of Sasquatch, the Saucer, and Peter, Paul and Mary.. Maybe she copyrighted it and sold it at the Forum Fest. :D :D NB

Maybe she copyrighted it and sold it at the Forum Fest. :D :D NBI remember that photo too. She did a great job Photoshop-ing the various images together with the space ship! Too bad it's not there anymore ... the newer Forum members would probably get a chuckle from it.
