Today I attended my granddaughter's high school track meet at the field house on the Durham campus of UNH.

Now, I know this isn't boating, isn't skiing, isn't snowmobiling, or any other of many topic usually discussed on the Forum, but I just want to say that the 3 hours I was in the field house were like being removed from the 'world around us'. Several hundred high school athletes, boys and girls, and a whole lot of spectators, mostly family members, ALL consumed by the activities at hand, and all cheering and encouraging all participants, made me stop and realize just how nice it is to be living in this country, and, in particular, where we each live in New Hampshire.

The participants were running, jumping, and putting, and the spectators were cheering, laughing, and holding their breath - all at the same time.

If you were ever fortunate enough to attend a track meet, take a moment and recall the event, and if you ever get a chance to do so, please do so!

I am not saying that these young athletes are Olympic stars, I am just saying that they are young people, our young people, doing their best - and we need to support them.

One of the sad things is that there are few schools, if any, in the Lakes Region that have the facilities for indoor track at their own school. Brewster Academy, a private school does, but not aware of any public schools.

Two of my grandkids went to Prospect Mt. HS, and participated in indoor track. It was always the trip to UNH for the indoor meets. My hat is off to those kids who do participate, even though they do not have best of facilities at their schools.

Glad you enjoyed it, Camp Guy.

I never thought about this much, never mind realized it was the case. This is a shame since in the Lakes Region winter is typically long and difficult. In greater Boston there are many, many such indoor facilities.
