Plane Crash at Weirs Beach

One of those small planes just crashed at entrance channel into Paugus Bay
I saw him flying real low, next thing he crashes in front of house near entrance to channel. Can't tell if he is hurt

Don't know if it was the same guy but we saw an ultralight that looked just like that flying over Winnisquam today, took like 4-5 passes by us at different altitudes.. Friend who's familiar with flying said it sounded like his engine was bogging out. Wishing the best for the pilot!

The key is maintaining control, especially while in the air. A common cause of accidents is attempting to "stretch" a glide, where you get too slow and the aircraft stops flying, if this happens too high above the ground it can be disastrous. It sounds like this poor guy just didn't have enough energy left over to get over the rock he hit. Probably just a matter of inches. I hope he recovers quickly.

Wow, thats really unfortunate. We pulled out of the channel about 5 minutes after it happened, from the water it didn't look so bad.

I'm surprise of Emerson's comment that light weight are to fly 1,000 feet and above. I have not check the latest AIM, my AIM dated in the mid 70's shows no restrictions for 'sport' or 'hobby' aircrafts.

Very unfortunate - very sorry for the family.

That said, there are several ultralight operators in the area who are reckless and a hazard to others; the 'red baron' who flys over Wolfeboro is an example...

According to the article in your link, Ms Bergen from the FAA states that the aircraft was not an ultralight, but an aircraft made by Zevo, I believe.

I believe Mr Emerson was referring to flying over crowds (ie Weirs beach area) where you should be above 1,000 feet AGL, less populous areas you can fly at 500ft or over water you can fly at 5 feet as long as you don't overfly anyone and are not a danger to anyone. Going from memory here, but I believe that pretty much sums it up. Of course it sounds like the accident AC was having engine problems, if so, the pilot probably steered to avoiding hurting anyone, which in turn may have forced him to an area less safe for an emergency landing.

At this point it's pretty much all speculation.
