10 Worst Towns in NH? Maybe Some BUT Not All!

Yeah......Laconia: #7 on the list of crappy, poor, down & out, no-money, no-job, high theft rate, and 2-murders in 2014 ..... is soooooooo baddddddd......that even the not-so-el-cheapo deluxo walk-in medical clinic www.lrgh.org/programs-services/convenience-care where it costs just $100-cash to be seen by a real medical doctor for a sore throat or something has gone and left Laconia, and moved just across the town line to Gilford.

Like, where else can you go when you are really sick, and have no health insurance, and no regular doctor, and have heard the horror story about going to the Emergency Room for a tooth ache with no insurance, and ended up with a bill for $1132, plus you still have your tooth ache.

Even if the clinic has now moved next door to Gilford, the hospital in Laconia, the LRGH, is the only place with a reasonably lo-priced walk-in clinic.

So's, Laconia has some real good health services!

Yeah, the people of Alton knew what they were doing in 1998 when they voted not to make Camp Alton into a town waterfront park, and to let it be sold for private property. And, now Alton has the most expensive single family home probably in the entire state in Bob Behre's 'Long View' perched atop clay point, and looking down the lake with a long view, all the way to Center Harbor ....... for sale ...... assessed for something like 18-mil, and asking 50-mil .....doesn't everybody in Alton live in a mcmansion like Bob's?


Besides, if Camp Alton had become the Town of Alton-winnipesaukee town park, it would probably be a messy mish-mash of a seasonal use, park area ....... just take a look at the Gilford town beach area.....that is not so nice despite the beautiful 1100' long beach.


.... oh well .... may God bless the Town of Meredith ........ thankfully, Meredith does a super-duper job with their town parks, town athletics, and town roads ..... now if only the State of NH could come up with the money to re-do their state owned Meredith Neck Rd.

If you think about it, New Hampshire is not really a state in the the way of Maine, Vermont, or Massachusetts: New Hampshire is more like a collection of many different towns that are bordered by the three states, and Canada.

I was surprised to see Laconia on the list. It's really not a bad city, my main problem is just that the heroin dealers usually can't make change, and only a couple of them accept paypal.

That article is so right! Absolutely awful places to live! In fact, anyone from southern New England or any of the more "developed" states who might even be thinking about a move to any town in this crummy state should definitely reconsider. They'll be much happier just staying where they are. :)

When I read the article, I thought it said Alton had nothing to do, and you had to drive to Concord to essentially find something to do. I guess that's true if you want to go to a different restaurant each night, and have the choice of several nightclubs. If you like a town with a relatively low tax rate, relatively low housing costs, and easy access to travel N-E-S-W, maybe Alton is not so bad . ;) :)

Perhaps the statement was written with tongue in cheek, in which case some type of smiley would have been helpful. If not tongue in cheek, then it is trolling and could cause the thread to be moved to the fishing forum. :) I think it may be the former. ;)

I was born and raised in the City of Boston I moved here to Laconia as a young adult; got married and raised two wonderful children who both attended Laconia public schools. Our oldest just graduated Michigan State University and our youngest will be starting his second year there this fall.

From my perspective Laconia is a wonderful place to live. We love the year round natural beauty and this time of year we get out on the big lake every chance we get. I still have many friends that live in Boston and I miss them dearly. That being said, you could not pay me to move back there. The quality of life here is so much better. We love it here!

If you really miss your Lawrence friends many of them come to the public beach at the Weirs on July Fourth. Perhaps that is an opportunity for a reunion?

Using a 90's Sony Camcorder on a piece of rebar for a colonoscopy sounds more entertaining. For all I care, those degenerates can stay right where they are. :laugh:

I might be a buzzkill goodie goodie here, but I truly believe that most of what people become is a result of their environment--I went to a private school in Lawrence and am doing pretty good, but the native Lawrencians outside the privilege of my private school gates with single parents, financial distress, etc. didn't fare as well.

Which is why having a town like Alton on here is very weird--I'm quite convinced the people of Alton are quite happy and comfortable living there!

Well ...... does anybody remember Walt Havenstein, the Republican candidate for New Hampshire governor in November, 2014 who lost the election with 47.3%, 229,596-votes. Didn't he live in Alton for maybe two or three years, but decided to leave Alton after the election, and go move to Texas or someplace because he was unable to find suitable employment here in NH? Having received 229,596-votes, it is a wee bit shocking that he had to move to Texas to get a good paying job. Why ...... with all that name recognition, he could have hung around Alton and kept busy with both interior and exterior painting all year around!

Well lets see - here we have Walt who has had a very successful career in the Marines and held several executive positions in the defense industry... clearly a very smart guy who is doing something productive, or I suppose he could cheer at the fact he took a rotten grapefruit back to Hannifords and got 2X's his money back and constantly belly ache about the condition of Meredith Neck Rd.

All the "best/worst" stories on the internet are dependent on criteria used. For example, most "best schools" rankings use both "total per-pupil spending" and "diversity" as positive elements, when it's well-known that spending has no correlation with outcomes and as far as "diversity", well, let's say your mileage may vary.

This ranking of NH towns uses only a few elements, one of which is population density, and "low" is a negative.

Most people who live in Alton, or elsewhere up here, probably look at low population density as a positive.

I read the article and in the case of Alton I believe the crime rate may have landed the town on the list. I also believe that the crime rate may come from its proximity to Rochester. Rochester was also on the list. The article also stated it was merely an opinion based upon some readily available data. Just my take on it as I was surprised too.

I don't see Wakefield as a high crime area, not is Alton. Neither should have made the list in my opinion.

Rochester and Somersworth however are spot on.

Taken in isolation correct - data does not lie.

A statistical analysis is just that. Where do the statistics come from? Who collects the statistics? What statistics are included and what statistics are not included.

But not all cities and towns collect statistics correctly or in the same way. Some don't report much while others report a great deal.

"Lebanon (NH) is the best place to live in New Hamshire." Something like this was the headline of the Valley News. Dig a little deeper and find out that the author had never set foot in Lebanon, NH. Never spoke with anyone in Lebanon, NH. Never visited town hall. Never did any shopping in Lebanon. Never nothing physically in Lebanon.
Although the folks in Lebanon may like their town I don't see Lebanon, NH as the best town in New Hampshire.
BUT statistics (at that time) made Lebanon, NH the "best" town.

Surveys such as this are good for some uses. But not actual gospel.

I'm still scratching my head on Alton. I must have missed a rash of break ins during the winter. Did a crime spree hit the summer camps when nobody was home?
On the best places... I just moved from Claremont to Lebanon. That view or stat or poll is accurate. Claremont isn't dangerous, but it lacks in many ways. Lebanon deserves it's praise.
Hanover is usually #1 on the lists. All I know is that I enjoy Hanover's Golf Course...
I'd put Wolfeboro #1, but I'm a raging homer :)
