Today while my wife was cooking on our electric stove on the top burners, (flat surface type), she heard a big pop sound, and saw sparks fly up from the back of the stove. She immediately had me come to investigate.

Stove contiues to work without issues. I do notice now that the two burners on the right work fine, but the lights on tha back panel does not come on anymore when either burner is turned on.

Any idea what may have happened here? And do I have a potential safety issue? Stove is about 18 years old and works fine !

Thanks,
BD

Loud noises and sparks from an electrical appliance are never a good thing.

If I were you I'd call 18 years a good run and replace that ASAP.

You said the sparks came from the "back"of the stove. If you meant behind it then I would check where your cord is connected to your stove. Check to see if it has a worn cord from abrasion or if the terminals came loose. Turn off breaker before tightening! Sometimes you can have a pop from a short and not trip the breaker.

Yep. Pull the breaker. Use the grill for the time being.

Check out some listings. There's the one in Rochester. $400. Offer $200 and go from there. Last thing you want is something happening while you're asleep. :(
