Dock Circulator Motor Rebuild

My dock circulator motor has a seal around the shaft which is leaking. This has allowed water to enter the motor and most likely damage the bearings. It still turns freely but makes a loud noise.

Is there any place that will rebuild this motor or should I just scrap it and buy a new one?

If you have an "Ice Eater" from Powerhouse then a replacement motor is about $500. That's about 80% of the cost of a new unit. The motor is oil filled and not easy to repair. However you can send the motor back to the factory for repair.

Units should be stored upside down to lubricate the seals.

In the old days there used to be a local shop in every city that would rebuild electric motors.

I thought you leave them in the water, just disconnect the breaker. Haven't touch mine since 2001!

I can't leave mine in the water. It is mounted to an aluminum frame that is about 10 feet beyond the end of my crib dock. Not enough winter depth to attach it to the dock.

Anyway I think keeping it upside down half the year to lubricate the seals, like the manufacturer recommends, is a reasonable idea.

I've had Fays rebuild many motors,the last being a 15 hp costing $1000.ouch but they are very good.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Yes, it can be rebuilt but could cost almost as much as a new motor. Isn't that the way it usually turns out.
