Hello all- this is my first post- I've been reading for the past year and we're driving up in 2 weeks to see a house in the area.
Would you kindly suggest a friendly 'nothing fancy' place for us to stop for
lunch? We're leaving NJ at 5am, and I think we'll be coming up 93N- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated~ Thank you!

Village Kitchen (Has a big sign out front that says "Country Cookin") is great. Fair prices and good food.
Route 25 in Moultonboro. You can't miss it.

Welcome Marinewife
Oh my.....you have great places to visit and see in the surrounding areas in Tuftonboro. You will be in the the most glorious setting in the lakes region called Melvin Village. Melvin Village which is in Tuftonboro has a great resturant called the Pine Cone. Ask to talk to Dave and Sheila the owners. They will give you good advise on local folks. We welcome you to the area. Send me a PM ( private message through the forum ) if you have other questions.
If you're coming off 93 thru Moultonboro to get to Tuftonboro I would stop at the Bob House on Rt25 Moultonboro. Village Kitchen mentioned above is also very good, especially for breakfast.
People I know that come up from NJ don't typically go via RT93. They come up 495 to RT16 to Rt 11/28 thru Wolfeboro. If you change an come that way several spots in Wolfeboro to hit.

Most people travel up 91 to 202 in Brattleboro. 202 will take you into Concord onto 93. Less traffic and congestion until you hit the longest traffic light in Meredith. Unless of course you found our secret to bypass Meredith! :D

I've been driving up from northern NJ (Clifton) since the early 1970's and have used all the routes suggested in earlier posts. The 495 to Rt. 16 route adds more than 10 miles to the trip. Here is the route I would use to get to Moultonborough:
Garden State Parkway to Tappan Zee Bridge take 287 East
Exit 9N to Merritt Parkway which brings you to 91N in Meriden Ct.
91N to 84 East in East Hartford
84 to Mass. Tpke in Sturbridge - on weekends, get off Mass Pike at Exit 10 in Auburn and take Rt. 290 to 495N. Take 495 to Exit 35 and take Route 3 north in Chelmsford into Nashua NH. You are on the Everett Tpke. which takes you into 93N in Hooksett.
93N to Exit 23 (Route 104) into Meredith (approx. 6 miles). Make a left at light onto 3 North and then make the right at the light at Mill Falls onto 25E.
I stay in Alton Bay which is 305 miles from Clifton. Leaving at 5 am I usually arrive in Alton Bay by 10:30 using this route. If travelling during the week, I don't take 290 thru Worcester, but stay on the Mass Pike to Exit 11A and get directly onto 495N from the pike.
Once I get above Hartford on 84 East, I tune into 1030 AM (WBZ radio) as they give regional traffic reports every 10 minutes on the 3's.

Depends on what side of Tuftonboro you are on you can try getting off at 93N at the Hooksett toll, travel 3A North to Rte 3 North to Rte 28. 28 will take you to the Alton Circle than take 25 into Wolfeboro. There is one side street that will take you almost directly on to 28 from 3A from Allenstown. Most GPS won't take you there unless you are in the shortest distance mode.

Thank you to everyone who posted restaurant suggestions and directions- I believe we're stopping in Wolfeboro first before Tuftonboro, so I guess I should re-read the NJ-W directions again before we set out.
My husband lived in NH when he was a skier in the 70's... took me up to NH 3 years ago for a vacation and I fell in love with your state.
We're driving up for a short weekend and I truly appreciate your input-
thank you again~

in Wolfeboro first I highly recommend O Bistro @ The Inn on Main 200 N Main St, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
Enjoy your weekend!

Follow ghaltonbay's directions, but use Rt 93 exit 15e instead to go to Wolfeboro. Stay on 202 to Epsom circle then take 28N to Alton Bay then to Wolfeboro. I have no restaurant recommendations but my fellow forum member are always on the mark.
ghaltonbay is the expert on traveling from NJ!

Here's a thought if you're coming up 93...try the rest stop right on the highway. We were up last Sunday and i meant to check them out, but didn't.

restaurant suggestion. I now consider The Common Man, very common.

Though I may somewhat agree with your statement, the OP requested a "nothing fancy" place for lunch. Also among the recommendations above are Bucky's, the VK and the Pine Cone. I haven't tried the Common Man rest stops, but thought that some on here might have and might have piped in regarding their experience.

For those who exit at the Hooksett Tolls for the Lakes Region, you can access the rest stop by driving further up Rte 3A. About a quarter mile from the intersection you will see the entrance on your left. No worries for those who turn off early.

Last Friday afternoon I stopped at the rest area on RT. 93N in Canterbury and it was closed. Does anyone know why? Could they possibly be putting all the highway money into the Hooksett rest area?

I used it the prior Tue. Maybe someone called in sick and it couldn't open or someone had to leave on an emergency.
I'm heading down South next week. I'll check again.
I would be upset if they closed this one. Some of The State Reps don't want to hear from me, again. :D

If you're passing through Wolfeboro, stop at Nolan's on Main St right in the center of town. Great restaurant!
