Has anyone in the area had their homes/cottages painted with Rhino Shield? It is touted to be better than paint or vinyl siding. If it works it would be better than having a house painted every few years. Is it all that it's cracked up to be? Your thoughts or experiences, please.

Maybe on vinyl or fiberglass sidings, definitely NOT on wood or other porous surfaces. They need to breath to prevent moisture problems.

Do you think a small company can outsmart chemist and industry giants? From someone who knows the industry...don't do. The failures and difficulty to repair are too great. Never mind the price. Read the reporting magazine and they will tell you true testing results.

The insulation value of anything the thickness of a layer of paint is essentially negligible.

SUPER expensive a neighbor in mass priced them when painting again this summer. Rhino was literally the cost of four full blown "professional" paint jobs. That being said if you paint about every 5-6 years which is reasonable your payback is around 20 years. My neighbor said he'll be "pushing up Daisies" in 20 years so he'll let the next person worry about it. :eek: Not sure I can argue with that logic??

I was simply responding to the statement that it was not meant for "wood".

Personally, I have never used or know of anyone who has used the product.

The dock was in need of repair or replacement of the surface, lots of checking and splinters for the grandkids to run into. Can't afford to replace with composite so looked into this heavy duty paints (like Rhino Shield) but wanted to apply myself. Many of these paints are referred to as 3X or 10X which stands for their thickness compared to regular paint. Rustoleum makes one as well as Olympic and others. After reading all the reviews we have decided to stay away, far away. Really had problems staying down on decking maybe due to moisture under. Decided to go with outdoor carpet for now.

I think you're referring to Deck Restore. I doubt it is the same thing.

I used it on my deck which had splitter and checking issues.

We're two years in now and I have to say that I am happy with the results. They claim that it will extend the life of a deck by 7 years. One thing is that it is hot in direct sun.

I was told if you do a really good job of cleaning (like in your picture) using cleaning solvents then the Restore takes. But since this is on the dock the most I will do is pressure wash with plain water. Because of that and with the moisture from the water underneath it won't work for me.

I cleaned that deck with straight water and my pressure washer.

Took 2 layers of solid stain off.

No need for anything else.
