Meredith Neck

Being new to the Lakes Region, we're wondering what it's like living in the area of Meredith Neck. Seems like there's only one way in and out - is this is a problem especially in the summer? Anyone with first hand knowledge of living in this area? Thanks in advance :liplick:

I called the NH DOT a few days ago about the potholes on Route 11-C (which is Lily Pond Road) in Gilford, and their response was that it's unlikely to be fixed this year. :confused:

Both Meredith Neck Rd, about six miles long, and Barnard Ridge Rd, about one mile long, both belong to the State of New Hampshire, for some unknown reason, as opposed to belonging to the Town of Meredith.

Considering that the Town of Meredith does the snow removal, and does the pavement patch jobs, and that both roads are local use type roads located totally within the Town of Meredith, maybe the State of New Hampshire would be very happy to unload these roads onto the town for the bargain basement price of one dollar, and then the town could be responsible for the road's condition, whether it be good or bad, through summer rain, winter snow, hot temperature, cold temperature, heavy truck loads, and the high price of asphalt paving and a road rebuild; it could be a well maintained town road, and not an unbelievable crappy state road. I believe the last time the Meredith Neck Rd got repaved was in maybe about 1996?

So ..... welcome to New Hampshire .... home of the miserable state roads; where everyone needs to be driving a vehicle like a Jeep or a Ford Explorer..... Live Free and Drive .... but you need a Jeep to get around ....around here!

All things considered ..... just like we have a state bird, the black capped chickadee .... a state tree ... and a state fruit.... it seems like the legislature should come together and designate some one car like the 1997 Geo Tracker - $795 on craigslist ..... as the official NH-state car!!!:D:laugh:

Hi - back to the original question, which sounds more to me whether or not there is backup on the Neck rd given it is the only way in or out - the answer as far as I can tell is no. We are islanders, but we boat out of Sheps, and are driving up and down Meredith Neck Rd all summer, I am rarely even behind another car, and have really never had issues. It is a long windy road, and a bit bumpy - but traffic is a non-issue.

I would have to agree:

1. The road is in tough shape with bumps and potholes. Not unlike other roads around I suppose but a few of the rough spots will toss you around if you don't slow down.

2. Traffic has never been an issue at least as long we have been around for the last 10 years. Having said that, in the summer when you get out to RT25 over by Hannafords, the road does get busy. Sundays when people are leaving for the weekend it looks to be backed up for miles heading towards Center Harbor. On the bright side, you would be jumping in at the end missing all that if you are heading back to 93.

We lived on the neck for 7 years and its great. Very much like its own little community. It always felt more like being on vacation then the other side of the lights (where we live now).

Traffic in the summer can be tough unless your schedule allows you enough flexibility to avoid the worst of the cross over times (saturday around lunch and sunday from 11 am until evening).

We loved living out there before having kids but now their schedules dictate our lives (which means we live on the other side of the lights now).

I really miss living on Meredith neck but my wife is much happier with the convenience of living closer to 93.

Hi Cindido--

We've never had any issues getting off the neck in the years we've been here. There might be a several car back-up turning off Pleasant St onto Rte 25 mid-day on a Saturday or Sunday in July or August, but it's not a big deal. You also learn to do your errands early in the day during peak times or take other roads, (e.g., Barnard Ridge, if you're heading to Ctr Harbor, Moultonboro, etc)

About 1-pm today on the Meredith Neck Rd, just above the intersection with Pinnacle Park Rd/Blueberry Hill Rd, I honestly saw with my own two eyes, two big orange NH-DOT dump trucks and four DOT guys who were busy tamping asphalt patch into the pot holes along that stretch of the road.......hallelujah! .....can you believe it......some road repair work is finally getting done to this incredibly rough Meredith Neck Road which is about six miles long and belongs to the State of New Hampshire. If it were a Town of Meredith road, owned by the Town of Meredith, there is simply no way that it would ever be neglected down to it's current rough road condition. The Meredith Neck Rd will ruin your struts, shocks, and steering and tires/wheels if you don't slow way down to about 20-mph and carefully navigate all the pot holes, bumps, dips, and buckled asphalt. It has a posted speed limit of 40-mph.

About three years ago, the NH legislature thought they were doing all NH car owners a huge favor by lowering the annual state vehicle registration fee by about forty dollars less for each year. But what they did was to short-fund the NH-Dept of Transportation and the Meredith Neck Rd, an un-numbered state road, is now what we are stuck with.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hampshire_Highway_System ....... New Hampshire has 1465 miles of un-numbered state roads.

Well....instead of fixing the potholes .... absolutely nothing is happening with repairing the crumbly asphalt....aka the Meredith Neck Rd....so's it better to go buy a car with some big tires and deep suspension than to fix the road...just like a third world country.....last paved in about 1999? .... how bad can it get?
