Five More Islands

How many islands are on the lake? 365? 274? Several different numbers are thrown around, many based on folklore.

This site has always used Bizer's list of the islands on Lake Winnipesaukee (http://www.bizer.com/winislan.htm) as the official number posted on our homepage. The count was at 253 until recently but has now jumped to 258. From the Bizer website:

In the summer of 2013, Ron Guilmette and his nephew took it upon themselves to kyack to all the islands and to photograph them. Ron added five islands to the list and offered corrections to the list as well.

Think about that. Ron and his nephew kayaked to 258 islands this summer! Anyone want to double-check his findings? :)

I believe any mathematical number should always double checked and not by the original maker of the numbers. I would be more than happy to do it but being disabled and cannot swim I will decline to except the responsibility. Any other takers????:)

I'm wondering if there is an accepted definition of what constitutes and island on Winni.

I would assume that there is some minimum square footage above the reference line. For example I assume that a certain rock between Round and Forty is not an island but then what is?

Dumb question, as I am sure this has been covered, but how is it that in 2013 there is still uncertainty with the island count? Is it a matter of simply missing them or based on a changing definition?

Our first task was to define what constitutes an island. What is the dividing line between a large rock and a small island? When does one island become two? Well, this is our definition; your results may vary: It must be surrounded by water at high lake in June; It must have vegetation (otherwise it's just a rock); Man made breakwaters do not count as islands, BUT we do count former natural islands where fill has been added to join two land masses; There must be at least a three foot height difference between the island's tallest point (including vegetation) and the surrounding water's shallowest depth (e.g. if the surrounding water is only 14 inches deep, the island must rise at least 22 inches above the surface).

I wonder if there is a definition as to what is considered taxable property?

Should they tax a rock that is above water line at mean lake level or should it be x amount of square footage with vegetation? If anyone can find this piece of info than this should be the criteria for an island.

No, that would limit their ability to levy taxes too much. Most towns go by a "we'll know it's taxable when we see it" philosophy. ;)
