I was shocked to see that it was all being torn down to make room for some more modern living spaces.....more of the original charm of the area gone to make room for modern day.....I don't know, maybe its me, but who in their right mind would want to destroy the charm that made the area so wonderful and so full of magic......for money? It has to be for the dollar bill.....I've stayed in a few of the cottages, even the hotel once. I've eaten in the restaurant.....it troubles my soul seeing so much of the area.....fade away? Every year, when we make our trip or two to the area, we see more and more......gone, forever. We used to LOVE The Happy Landing!! Remember that place? We had a beautiful cottage in the family in Sachem's Cove, on Spindle Point since the 30's.....bought by our neighbor and torn down, to make room for a boathouse, that he never built.....it pains me.

Just a rant, and now just a few weeks until my wife and I are up for 6 days to celebrate our anniversary by ourselves, with no children in tow.....and since this is our first trip up this year, I'm sure we will see more gone away forever.....only to survive as memories, gone but not forgotten, but, only in our minds....to be remembered.....forever.

I'm very glad that no one was hurt in the fire, that is what is important anyway!

By your logic, we should all still be living in log cabins with no indoor plumbing?

Yes, time moves on. Locations change, things change. Some day these new condos being built will be torn down to build a new hover-building or something.

We used to LOVE The Happy Landing!! Remember that place?

If you REALLY loved it you would know that it was "Handy Landing" not Happy Landing! :)

As has been said: Time goes on, things change. It remains very difficult for retail and commercial properties to make it in this area in a very short season. You need enough income in 12 weeks to support 52 weeks of expenses. That is easier said than done.

Many local people have tried hard to hang on to their properties and retain the charm of the area but sometimes the reality is that change is necessary. That applies to both commercial properties as well as residential properties that have seen such an increase in their tax bill that they are forced to sell.

Sad, but true.

Remember Glennsteely, that all those "old" businesses you knew long ago, were also "new" once.

I'd like to think that all the "new" businesses started today, will be around for a long time and create new "old" memories for today's children long after our memories are sentenced to newspaper archives.

brk-Int.....Oh no, no, no.....hahaha, the log cabins would be ok, but we def need the plumbing!!

If you REALLY loved it you would know that it was "Handy Landing" not Happy Landing!

TiltonBB....this one really gets me. Are you sure? Wow, my memory is going with my memories!! I knew I should have passed on that last toke in 1986, it was the last one that did it, I am sure of it.....lol.
I just spent half an hour going through old pictures, found a ton from the roof deck on their beach, on top of a gazeebo, or picnic area or something.....could have sworn I had one of me, beer in hand, at their sign....but can't find it. Handy Landing, huh? Would have bet on Happy, oh well, I know I was happy there quite a few times!!

garysanfran.....you are correct, as are the rest of the bunch. I totally realize how tough it is trying to survive in business anywhere, and the times must change and we must change with them, my only point here is that the change is painful for me, coming up there for vacations, spaced by periods of 10 months, a year, sometimes more.....little changes smack me in the face like huge ones. Something residents see everyday as gradual change, is a total swap for me. Im up there, something is there, the next time I am there, it is gone, with something new in its place!! Thank God for this forum!! I get a heads up and kinda know what to expect....lol. I don't know, just my opinion, but I really miss what the area "used to be."

Don't get me wrong, I don't miss the old enough to stop coming up there!! I still love the new as well!! I will continue to come, once, twice maybe three times a year....contribute my $5000 in vacation spending to the local economy, and pass "new" memories as well as old to my children, who have spent their youth vacationing......at The Lake.

I seem to remember a motel called Happy Landing right next to the Margate (to the north on Weirs Blvd.). Was this the place Glenn Steeley was referring to?

Yeah, I know. But Glenn Steeley stated "Happy Landing" in his message. Maybe he was thinking of "Handy Landing", but there was also a motel called Happy Landing (next door to Margate). I remember staying there back around 1986.

The relatively "newly built" Hanfords in Gilford sells fruit. You don't have to climb any trees nevermind go out on a limb.

I might have fallen one too many times while climbing that tree!!
