Damaged/Missing Buoy - Near FL"30"

The other thread that mentioned CH16 reminded me of a missing red buoy on the south side of Bear Island near FL "30".

As I was approaching on Sunday I couldn't for the life of me figure out where it had gone, as I got closer I noticed it was sliced in half just floating. It appears someone chewed it up with their prop.

Be careful if passing through there...I stopped and called it in and MP indicated they would give maintenance heads up. It was nice knowing they monitor CH16.

Passing on the inside of that red marker has to be just barely 150 feet to shore. I was kayaking through there a couple of weeks ago and a boat zoomed around the corner and passed between me and the shore and i was inside the red marker. I almost got swamped. They should remove the marker permanently.

Yikes...however, removing the marker in this situation would not fix stupidity. Sounds like they should have slowed down when going by you.

It was nice knowing they monitor CH16.

I will routinely call MP via VHF on 16 for "Courtesy Reports" such as that or other matters and have never failed to raise them ! As the season moves on however, you may have to "hail" more than once --- do understand that it is one dispatcher whom is "multitasking" .... and there is always Mighty Moe as well !!

To assist, proper "hailing" should be made such as ..... "Marine Patrol, Marine Patrol -- (your boat name) on Ch 16".

Personally -- If your boat does not have a embossed name on it -- as you have a VHF at your disposal -- I would still seriously consider creating a "call name/sign" for transmission purposes (similar to the older CB "handles" ).

Be creative ! ....... "Hell Razor" works for me !!

Perhaps to clean it up a bit .... simply shorten it to Razor


Our daughter did a similar situation (you can often hear us on ch 69) her boat name is simply "SNAFU" ....

My Dad had TARFU and my granddad had FUBAR. They were used quite often during WWII. One was a Hackercraft and the other was a Higgins. Some folks on the lake remember them.
