Has anyone else noticed the green slimy algae that has been forming in many parts of the lake. I have it out in front of my property for the first time ever and we saw it all around Ragged Island when we went snorkeling there. It is awful and a pain to clean up.

We are in the cove between Sleeper's Point and Smith Point in West Alton, and last summer was the first time we saw this disgusting stuff along the very shallow shoreline and around our docks. It's really gross, isn't it? I won't swim off our dock anymore -- just out off the boat in the deep water. So we have the green algae plus the gloeotrichia bacteria (all the zillions of dots suspended in the water column.) From mid-August on the water quality really deteriorates.

It is good, it eats the slime on the bottom. Watch it sometime. I was told by a lady from the state that is is a good sign to see that in the lake. (I know it does look awful.)

What's good -- the gloeotrichia bacteria or the green algae? It's all pretty nasty, IMHO. If you try to rake it out of the water, it just falls apart into stringy webs.

I could be totally wrong, but I find it very hard to believe that this slimy green algae is "healthy" for the lake. We have a very sandy cove, and this stuff is just sitting in big blobs on the sand. And until last summer we had never seen it before.

It has been around for many years. The state came by to inspect our boat to see if any water is going into the lake from it (simple explanation) and I asked a lady who was with the guy who did the inspection to look at the glob. So she is the one who told me.
