So if the skys are clear the station will be visible for approx 6 minutes which is a good long time to see it. Dazzle your friends with some trivia tonight and tell them what it is....9:51 pm. it will almost directly overhead.:D

Ooops Nope I just checked the website you are looking at the other sighting for HTV4. Scroll down a bit more....I checked for Ossippee.

Found this website about HTV4. Seems it is a supply craft for the station sent up from japan....

LOL....but thanks, I'm gonna go out and see if I can see the supply section tonight as well. I think it will be clear enough.

Thanks for the heads up on this guys! My neighbor and I just watched it from the dock and it was pretty cool! It's amazing how fast it goes by!!

Just realized we watched the HTV4... It was still cool!!

Funy how your eyes can adjust to the dark. I was out watching the ISS and HT4 and I saw a few other things go by as well. I know they were not planes. Just too far up there. There certainly is a lot of stuff floating around up there.

I believe that would be the Perseid meteor shower that you saw

We watched the ISS go by, too. I was surprised at how bright it was, though after researching images of the station and seeing the size of its' solar array it makes sense.

One of our nightly activities is to hunt for satelites from the end of our dock. Last night was so clear we spotted many. There is an app you can get callled "Night Sky" that shows star & planet position (as well as satelite) interactively by holding the phone up against the sky. Very cool, but we feel it's cheating when hunting satelites.

The Persiods are beginning to show up in increasing frequency. There's no mistaking a meteor burning up in the atmosphere for a satelite slowly soaring majestically overhead. Sunday night is the peak, but Saturday night and Monday night will be quite active, too. Can't wait!

A meteor sighting can never be confused with a satellite. Meteors are moving so fast they go across the sky in a few seconds. Satellites will take a few minutes. There is a lot of other "satellite" sightings to see that are not what we think of as a satellite. Any space junk leftover from the numerous missions are satellites and many can be seen across the whole sky every night. The Iss usually has a short viewing window as it gets blocked out by the earth and the much higher space debris with be illuminated across the whole sky. I've spotted 1 or 2 items almost every night this week by randomly watching the sky. Also, you can't confuse a plane with any others moving light as all planes with have flashing lights.

Yeah I think there may be just a "few"other things up there....

For those that want to see it again.....Tonight at 9:03pm but a little lower in the sky at 67 degrees. From my house it looks like it would be coming from the Alton end of the lake and going toward Meredith....I guess.

I just happened to be on my deck staring up and here comes the ISS almost right overhead from w/sw to e/ne. A little later I see some other satellite heading 90 degrees to the ISS direction north to south and while I'm looking for more a few shooting stars came from the east.

I saw the same thing just as it was about to go out of view. It was not as bright, moving faster and perpendicular to the ISS.

I saw the Trifecta as well. I was heading home from a fantastic day on the lake, stop around 9 PM in the middle of Paugus Bay to see the show!

I notice lately the light pollution is getting worst. Or is it my old eyes????

The night pollution is getting worse, seems people have a need to light up the shore with spotlights and door lights all night long, I can't understand it....

I went out a couple of minutes to 9 and saw one huge meteorite, then the ss and then way high up a satellite going in the opposite direction. Can't wait for the perseids!

thanks again!

You can google Dark Sky Initiative. There are multiple links that address this concern. You also contact you local town about this and there are some guidelines that they are implementing to start controlling this stray light.
My Condo Association has started to replace the big globe lights they have with downward facing lights only. Still serves for security but nothing is getting beamed into space. There is really no longer any need for bad lighting.

Interesting that in Manchester the time was listed at exactly 10pm. Another good night for me again. I randomly was looking skyward around 9 and saw 2 more "satellites". I went outside for the 10:00 ISS viewing and saw quite a treat. While waiting for it to come into view I see a light a lot fainter than the other night crossing through the Big Dipper and think that the lower angle must be making it look dim. About 5-10 seconds later here comes the ISS in the same path chasing that light. I have not looked but I'm assuming this possibly might be a support vehicle that I was not aware of? A minute later a shooting star from the leading edge of the Persoid meteor showers. Doesn't look good for the big show tonite and tomorrow.:emb:

Yes the supply capsule is due to dock with the ISS on the 9th. As you can see by tonight stime difference of only one minute they must be very close now.

Sightings tonight are at 9:02pm for the ISS and 9:03pm for the supply module.

H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)-4 Robotic Onboard Trainer (ROBoT)-2 Training: Cassidy, Nyberg, and Parmitano completed an HTV simulated approach from 30 meter hold through capture. This training session gives the crew a big picture of the HTV approach and capture. Following training, the crew participated in a conference with ground specialists. HTV-4 is planned to launch August 3rd and berth on August 9th.

H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)-4 Preparations and Status: Parmitano gathered the necessary equipment for HTV vestibule outfitting, needed following the grapple and berthing of HTV-4 scheduled for Friday, August 9. Today, HTV-4 is performing a series of four maneuvers (Plane Change Maneuvers and Height Adjustment Maneuvers) raising the altitude from approximately 125 km below the ISS to approximately 28 km below ISS. Through orbital mechanics, HTV4 is closing in on ISS, and following the burns will be approximately 4500 km behind the ISS and closing at 300 km per orbit.

I did find out that it was the htv-4 right after my last post. I did see that craft will be leaving on Sept 4th so with any luck we will have a repeat performance in reverse...plus....It is supposed to be a destructive re-entry 2 days later so maybe a manmade shooting star?

I missed the rocket launch by 3 minutes but wondered if anybody else saw the contrail? Might not have been visible at the lake but from Bedford/Manch there was a huge contrail/rocket plume left in its wake running from south to east. I checked almost an hour later and to my surprise it was still in the same position and deteriorated at all. Really cool.

Also, for you early bird viewers there are a bunch of morning sightings upcoming with some very relatively high in the sky angles on Sat, Sun, Mon and Tues.

I did not see the contrail, but did catch the rocket. It looked similar to the ISS, but appeared orange in the sky instead of white.
