Anyone have any idea what the helicopters have been doing in the vicinity of Belknap Mountain today?

There has been an air and ground search for a missing 19 year old woman today but that was over in Effingham. Maybe you saw the helicopters heading that direction coming from Concord.

The lone helicopter was removing, giant bag by giant bag, the debris from the dismantled building that stood directly next to the base of the fire tower. My wife, dog and I were hiking through just as the crew was completing the day long task - 56 chopper trips worth from the summit of Belknap to the parking area at the top of the Carriage road. We hike here regularly and we have been impressed with how neat and clean the work crews have been able to keep the area around the new cell tower during demolition/construction and now even more demolition.

Actually, WLNH moved to the top of Belknap and began broadcasting the beginning of this year. They put up a new tower, new building, and consolidated everyone up there into one tower (in concept) and one new building. You are seeing the end of this process.

Initially, the state would have never allow private enterprise on state mountain tops. Then Metrocast came along and proposed running regular power and phone on poles to the top. (It used to be on the ground armored cable), then the COOP came along and proposed a new large tower in exchange for their presence. This allowed a key point for their new smart meter system. Now WLNH comes along, puts in a new building and a replacement gigantic tower for everyone there in exchange for their presence.

Its really hard for local private enterprises to survive when the state sponsors this stuff. OTOH, the helicopter people made megabucks here.
