It appears the water temp in the website isn't being updated any longer. Does anyone have any idea of the current water temp in the lake? I've got Grandsons who can't wait for it to warm up to "swimming temp".

The lake water temperature taken today at the dam was 59 degrees and it seems the lake water level has plateaued just below "full".

For comparison, Black Cat water temperature is taken at 10ft depth, the dam temperature is taken at 1ft depth and on the south end of the lake, so the discrepancy between both readings is expected.

The water temperature at our place on the east side of Bear Island was 59 degrees on Sunday, May 12th. Our neighbor's kids were water skiing [in their wet suits]. Great weekend!!!

The Black Cat station was showing around 60 last weekend (cooler at the 10 ft gage) but is now reading around 50 because the weather has been very cold the last 5 days, near freezing several nights in a row and cool and breezy during the days.

No one seems to be updating the lake temps at the link on the main page. Not sure what's up with that?

I think the Black Cat readings must be off for some reason. Those readings usually track close to mine and the others reported around the lake. Seems odd that it would be the only place reporting about 10 degrees lower than everywhere else.

Also, if you look at the historic temperatures on this site, temps around 60 for mid-May are the norm.

The last 3 days the wind has been howling with whitecaps all over. That may have churned up the water enough to make a difference. If I remember your place is generally in the lee side of the lake, no?

....oh, what a difference a year makes.....just twelve short months ago.....la-tee-da!

....oh buoy, the water temp one year ago on June 17, 2012 was somewhere between 68 and 72-degrees.....maybe 70-degrees warm......my...my...my! ....and today, June 17, 2013, it's like 62-degrees......yikes!

This afternoon, though cool and threatening rain, the lake was flat-calm.

Ideal weather for dock repairs, and under those glowering skies—and a bit late in the day—I decided to get started. This involved about two hours in above-the-knee immersions. :eek2: However, the lake was free of boat traffic, which is necessary for successful completion of the repairs, including the use of clamps and glues.

Even more significant—to me—there were no sounds of voice or machinery to take away the quiet ambiance of an afternoon at the lake. From 4:30 onward, the afternoon could've been taken from a thousand years ago.

I had a Loon surface within 15-feet of me, and we just stared at one another. Bird-calls carried across from another Town! In my deep acre of woods, something I couldn't see sounded angry at me. :eek:

Still, it was a "renewal" experience, followed by a nice sunset to finish the day. :)

During those hours, the only vessel to come into view as the light dimmed-away, was a kayak at 8:45.

The temp at Lakeport was 66 on Thursday...I'd be very surprised if this Thursday's reading isn't up 8-10 degrees.

I figured Bob Fay might have been retiring.

When there has been a stand-in for Bob some of the temp readings reported have seemed to be off and inconsistent with the readings Bob was reporting. I always assumed it was a parallax problem when different people were viewing a non-digital gauge from different angles.

I'll miss Bob's friendly voice and his sign-off "Have a day!".

The depth of the temp sensors can make a big difference as well as where they are located in relation to possible springs nearby.

...we also had some pretty good rainstorms move through. Air temps dropped over 10 degrees last evening with the passing of a thunder storm. dropping that cold rain can have an effect on surface temps, depending on the depth of the sensor. It will come back up, I know it will...just in time for me to get my boat back in the water after having new canvas put on.:D

When the boat came to Parker's, they kept only the bimini and had a local Alton Bay canvas guy that did work for them do a cockpit cover and bow cover. Bimini is gray, covers that were made were red. Thread is already pulling out in areas and the red is fading quite a bit.

Boat is at Shipshape to have a camper enclosure done along with a new bow cover, and color will match the bimini.

On today's ( 9/11/13) Black Cat Island weather, it says the water temp at 2 feet is 31 degrees F. Is that an error? 39 degrees at 10 feet.
Wouldn't it be starting to ice over at that temp??

At a 95' deep site between Governors and Timber we recorded a constant 20.3 deg Centigrade (68.5 F) from 0.5 M down to 8.5 M (27.9 feet). The thermocline was at 9.5 M.

Probably the water is warmer in shallow areas.

The temp dropped 1.5 deg C between 8.5M and 10M. So 18.8 C or 65.8 F at 10M.
We define a sudden drop of 1 deg C per meter or more as the thermocline.

Looks like the water temperature has made a very big drop down in temp in the last two weeks. Looking at every September going back to 2000, there is no drop down that was similar to Sept 2013 ....... like what happened? ....... and where did the heat go?

It's not surprising, it has been so cold. Every morning the steam is just blowing off the lake!

While temps are dropping, as they always do at this time of year, I'm wondering about the readings being posted here. The drop from 70 to 61 was too fast, too soon.

I have a probe off my dock that typically tracks the Winni temps within a degree to two. It's 3' down, under the dock, in the shade. When the 61 degree post was made last week, I was still getting over 70 on the warm sunny days.

Right now I am reading 64 degrees on mine. Is it possible the Lakeport device is defective?

Looking at the last 3 water temp readings posted, there should be little doubt that the Lakeport probe is defective. The water temp simply doesn't swing 5 degrees in one day, not to mention that the readings of 28 and 30 are not possible.

Based on my experience with my probe on Merrymeeting, work on a UNH lake monitoring team, and the posts from others, it looks like things started to go awry in the late August/early September time frame.

If so, nice to see a temp uptick on Wednesday. A sign that, despite the recent weather, the water mass is absorbing the suns rays and starting to creep back up in temp.

I'm interested in getting the WeatherCam's water temp readings back in business. I don't know what it will take though. Water temp monitor says it's working properly (green LED light) but the readings are all messed up ever since lightning "struck the clock tower" about 1000 feet away, back on Labor Day weekend. All electronics at this location got knocked out (one of the perils of running an "always-on" weather monitor on the waterfront) but a couple days later a 12-year-old friend whose family came for Labor Day got all the electronics back online (still not sure what the kid did!) but he said the water temp monitor was a no-go.

I'm looking into a wireless, long-term solution. If anyone has an idea let me know.

I would gladly work with a group like UNH or PSU who would provide the equipment. Any solution that would free me from rushing home to protect the equipment from thunderstorms every time they happen.

This was a very cold and rainy summer except for the last week of August and first week of September, and now the water temperature has dropped from 71 to 67 over the weekend of September 13-14 which is a huge drop.

It's my guess that the water temp never got up warmer than about 73 this year which is about five degrees cooler than most years high of 78 in the first week of August ..... but not this year ......brrrrrrrrr........a cold and moldy 2014 summer! Ok.....so just maybe it may have touched 74 for like one half of one day.....but that's all......such a cold, rainy and gray summer.........ugh......where do I go to get a refund for this defective summer of 2014!:eek::laugh:

How cold was the water temperature in August? It was so cold that it looks like the State of NH-Dept Environmental Service, Lakeport Dam, Laconia was a-scared to report it as it normally does???? What happened to all the numbers......nothing but blank days with no temp numbers for August-2014?

We only probed down to about 35', no sharp drop in temp. On 9/10 a fellow volunteer did a probe in the broads and the cline was at about 40'.

What has happened is that the upper 30' or so as cooled a few degrees and the sharp transition point is lower.

So, not being a fishing person, do you have to troll down even lower?

It depends on what species of fish you are going for but for the most part when bait fish are active they will be in the thermocline and if fishing for salmon I will normally fish the top of the thermocline.

Water temps on the north end of Paugus Bay are now 39 degrees 12" below. Last year on this day there was a lot of ice. It won't be too much longer for the "flip".
