Just wondering what type of prices people are seeing on the water???

I just got gas at West Alton Marina. It was $4.23 a gallon - OUCH!

Wow! Why the steep prices? The pumps down in the Southern part of NH are at $3.30 for regular. I understand it will be more at the lake but over $4.00 is a bit much.

Perhaps it will come down like last year?...

Edit: I think this was posted by Rich last year. I thought it was useful also....http://www.winnigas.com/

Is this fresh fuel or what was in the tanks from last season?
Is there a rough rule of thumb for car"gas stations" pricing vs marina"on the water" fueling stations? Should a boater expect to pay $1 more per gal. on the water to feel its a fair price?

Just remember that most of the marinas are pumping 89 octane gas, or the middle grade at a landbased gas station.

That adds 10 cents to the cost per gallon over what most of us put in the car. Certainly is not 70 or 80 cents per gallon as shown by these early prices.

Most marinas seem to pump 89 octane gas. The Merc 200 on my new pontoon calls for 87 octane. Does anybody know of any marinas that have 87 octane gas?

Fay's is at $4.09 for mid grade.

Usually the lake prices are 30-50 cents higher than land prices in the lakes region. Luckily the land prices there are lower than the prices in Southern NH or Massachusetts.

I think that all marinas in the region typically are standardized at 89 octane or higher. For the $0.10 per gallon difference you are better off with it anyhow. Keep in mind an Optimax runs at 5000+rpms (5750 max), much higher than any car will run during average driving.

Also remember some marinas add additives to the gas when they take delivery saves you from having to buy it and making sure its in your tank. Shep Browns startron-Channel valvetech etc. The supplier doesn't add this the individual marina does.

With the fuel sitting in the tanks all winter, treated or not, how good is the gas that comes out first thing in the year? Even treated gas is good for only so long and 5-6 months is a long time for fuel to sit.
I know there is a lot of pros and cons but that is why I drain all or most and stabilize the rest when I store. I figure a little old gas mixed with a lot of new gas is better then a lot of old gas.

$4.54 at Goodhue Hawkins in Wolfeboro last Saturday. I didn't notice the price or the fact that it is 93 octane until he started to pump. At 20 gallons, I asked him to stop.

Is that a very fast pump or are you a little slow on the draw?:D

I believe the fuel at G & H also has an enzyme fuel stabilizer in it which might be why the price is a bit higher. I do suspect you get what you pay for.

Most of the Marina's have 89 octane, as that is what most I/O call for.....

Although running the 89 octane probably will not cause you any issues, you may find that when you drop back to 87 the engine doesn't behave anymore... In short once you start running 89 octane you are likely stuck doing so...
Additionally contact Mercury and make sure the running a higher octane doesn't void you warranty....

On the flip side, do you have the ability to bring gas to the boat, or take the boat to a gas station once in a while... Being able to run 87 octane, and get it at a regular gas station could save you $$$$...

My 200 Mercury actually calls for MINIMUM 87 octane gas. I don't know of any marinas that carry other than 89 octane.
I'm not inclined to either haul 87 octane gas to the boat or haul it out to bring it to a gas station for a fill up.
In a car, the on board computer will adjust the timing to the octane rating of the fuel used. I wonder if the same is true for an outboard motor. Anybody know?

Using a higher octane is generally fine - that is why it says minimum 87.

Using lower than recommended is when you can have problems with pre-ignition or pinking which can damage the motor. That is what modern engines adjust timing to avoid.

Those who trailer the boat or carry the gas to the boat, the Shell station next to NHMS is selling 87 octane for $3.29.

I have the gas buddy app on my 'droid. Too bad it doesn't have the marinas on. I did enter Lakeport Landing 3 years ago, and it displayed it. I believe if there is enough folks posting lake gas, we an see the postings on GasBuddy.

I'd love to see more people enter gas buddy data. I use it all the time too.

Last year I sent them a request to have a marine gas option, they actually replied and said they were working on it. But a year later and it looks the same to me.

Why don't we just start entering the data and see what happens?

Someone online here also posted this website that still seems to be in use and is easy to use:

I don't know if this will work, and it's just as easy to go directly to www.winnigas.com with your browser, but if you prefer an Android app, try this with your Android phone:

<iframe src="http://www.appsgeyser.com/social_widget/social_widget.php?width=100&height=80&apkName=Lake Winnipesaukee Gas Prices&simpleVersion=yes" width="180" height="220" vspace="0" hspace="0" frameborder="no" scrolling="no" seamless="" allowtransparency="true"></iframe>

I'm not affiliated with www.winnigas.com at all, but it was easy to whip together this app that invokes the website directly.

If this works, let me know and I'll try to get in touch with the owner of winnigas and see if he like it.

Since this is not on the google play store (yet), you need to set your phone to allow external content to be installed.

Have to ask this question, as I have not bought gas for boat at a Winnie marina in years, and excuse my lack of this knowledge on the subject, but...........

Is there any difference in the gas quality the marina's sell vs. a regular gas stations ?
Is it basically the same type gas, except the cost ? :(

The gas itself is the same, usually 89 octane, so comparing with the "middle grade" at a gas station is the best way to figure the pricing difference. Additionally, some marinas have gas with the additive already mixed. ie: I get my gas at West Alton Marina (almost exclusively) and they have Valvtect additive in their gas.

I believe there are a few marinas selling 87 octane gas, and a few may also have 90 something octane that some of the higher powered boats may desire / require.

Some folks may say you shouldn't buy gas from a Marina at the start of the season. If I need gas at the start of the season, I just go get my gas...life is too short to worry about it.:)
