Stopped at Cumberland Farms at the Weirs for gas a couple of weeks ago and saw a sign offering 10 cents a gallon discount with their SmartPay card. Checked it out and signed up. It's a Cumberland Farms specific debit card. Once you've signed up you swipe the card at the pump, enter a PIN, and it lowers the price by 10 cents a gallon. If takes the payment from your bank account.

Every time you use it it generates an email letting you know the fact that it was used and the amount. You can have several cards, each with it's own PIN, and it only works for purchases at Cumberland Farms. We've been using it for the past couple of weeks. Definitely worth checking out!

Been using the card for the last couple of weeks and really like it.

Besides saving 10 cents a gallon, every time you use the card it sends you an email with the purchase details, including the amount and the location where it was used. At the end of the month it sends you an email with a summary of all your purchases, which makes it easy to keep track, since sometimes the pump doesn't print a receipt.

Hope the person who came up with this idea got a big raise! This system works perfectly!

What if I pay cash at the station? This isn't costing Cumberland Farms anything so why can't I get the 10 cents a gallon discount.

I'd be willing to pay cash if they gave me a discount for it.

Just wondering that's all.

I agree Rusty, but cash is so 2005. Everything is going electronic....sadly

Been using it here in Mass for almost two months. No downside that I can see so far and the email that the card has been used is a nice feature.

Someone using the Smart Pay, who would usually pay with a credit or debit, is saving Cumberland Farms at least .10 a gallon by using Smart Pay instead. Gas stations pay around 3% transaction fees for credit and debit purchases. Smart Pay is easy for the customer and the gas station recoups the transaction fees from people who use plastic. Much more people are paying at the pump or using plastic to buy everything from a pack of gum to a full tank of gas. Since your Smart Pay is connected to your checking account, there are no bank fees to Cumberland.
Cash is still king, but those who pay cash are not the ones costing the station bank fees. Cumberland's target is the plastic users.

I use mine right from my iPhone. I can use the app at the pump or inside to pay for items in the convenience store.

Nobodies mentioned it so I assume there's no yearly fee to maintain the card?
