See the following from the Laconia Citizen's Web site. Good thing that snowmobiles were not around!!!!!

First-class runaway 125 years agoBy WARREN D. HUSE

LACONIA — Pike Davis "figured in a first-class runaway," Feb. 10, 1880.

"Driving into town in company with Mrs. Davis, behind a pair of spirited colts, he encountered a boy coasting in the road," reported The Laconia Democrat, 125 years ago this week.

The colts "not being used to that kind of a team, took fright and dashed along Court street at the top of their speed, becoming entirely unmanageable."

Davis "made a vigorous attempt to drive them across Main street and up the rising ground on Lake street (now Union Avenue), but the colts turned up Main street and stranded against one of the hitching posts in front of the O’Shea building."

Both Mr. and Mrs. Davis "were violently thrown and badly bruised and scratched, and the sleigh pretty thoroughly demoralized. It is to be hoped that this will include the whole catalogue of injuries done, but it seems almost a miracle that the results were not vastly more serious."

Can't you just see it?

"Jeepers, Mr. Wilson. I was just sledding along" :D

Poor kid was probably more frightened than the horses. I can sure visualize the event in my mind with the descriptive narrative, though!

Thanks for sharing it, Upthesaukee!

I guess with the invention of t.v. we didnt need to be so descriptive any more. Thanks upthesaukee....
