Anyone know if there is a bakery anywhere in the lakes region that sells really good Italian bread? I'm looking for old-world style Scali that tastes as good as the Scali I used to be able to buy at just about any Italian bakery I walked into. The stuff they call Italian Bread or Scali at the supermarket these days is tasteless. Ugh!

Two bakeries in Wolfeboro make terrific bread. We've been impressed with all the homemade baked goods we've tried at these places but don't remember if they do Italian bread, so you'd have to ask -- phone numbers and email addresses are on their Facebook pages:

There is a small building on RT3 going north in Tilton right before the Rodeway Inn that sells bread.I know a few local sandwich shops that use there bread and its good. According to there website they have another store in Plymouth. Here is their website http://www.mountainviewmanna.com/index.html

I'm no Italian but I always though that the Scali bread at Market Basket bakery was great.

That's a brand new store that just opened. The building was a friend of mine who passed away, he bought it and rehabbed it after it was only about 2 years old and my friend had put in somewhere around 4 million I heard. He put around 2 million into it and about another 1 million for the store. He brought tile in from Italy and held back on nothing everything is top notch. The restaurant is very good but very pricey for that area I think. He has really fixed up the old depot up.He is using the same vision my friend had before he passed away. Now if they could just fix the intersection which I believe is happening very soon w will be in great shape.

I believe the current owner of Tuscan Kitchen is Joe Faro..We have begged and pleaded with him to open up a store in the Winnipesaukee area. Love the Winni area, but getting real Italian food (outside of our own la cucina) is REALLY problematical. I have yet to find a restaurant that knows how to cook pasta al dente. Italian bread in the Winni area; fuhgettabout it.

Real old-world style, "have to work at it" Italian bread. It's worth a drive to the North Shore just to pick up a couple of loaves. You can find the list of stores that sell it here: http://www.sunraybakery.com/Links.html

I visited the Farmers market Sunday and I am very impressed at what they had to offer. There were a number of excellent local bakeries on display. It is well worth visiting and to check out the bakeries.

Across from Autoserv from 10 to 2 on Saturday and Sunday.
