This video was posted over on Ice Shanty. Thought it might help those of you attempting to access Rattlesnake and what you might be in for...
I think anyone venturing out to their island camps should watch this first...

....too bad....better to be safe than to be sorry; a 31-second video with the ice going in a short distance of about 100-yards from six inches thick down to two inches thick as one approaches Rattlesnake Island on a four wheel, all-terrain-vehicle and then by foot....two inches might be plenty thick for traveling the ice on cross country skis but it is really all about one's comfort level when out on the ice by oneself......it can probably get a little bit scary!
....say-hey for six dollars....one can always go to the PSU Ice Arena in Plymouth and go ice skating with no worries about drowning in the 35-degree lake water....plus they have a Zamboni and a sound system too .... probably not the same....but what the hey? ... and the ice there is perfect!

The THIN ICE may not be the only problem out on the Lake this weekend, especially with WINNI DERBY going on. With the "Blizzard" coming, the snow will hide a lot of HAZARDS.
There are two good sized pressure ridges in Moultonboro Bay with a good amount of water around them. One is in the vicinity of Buzells Cove and the other off Blacks Island. They have been changing daily. There also could be more who knows. This could be made more serious with the anticipated snow fall. It may be very hard to distinguish these conditions.
As the Sergeant on Hill Street Blues used to finish with “BE CARFULL OUT THERE”!!!!!!
Anyone that knows of other Pressure Ridges, Open Water spots or other Hazards please add to this thread.

.. you would like to get to be the one in the sled. :)
This was taken on 1-26 in Alton Bay where the Alton and New Durham FD was training for Ice Rescue.
Took a ton of pictures and sent them to the Alton FD. Impressive bunch of Guys and Gals.

One poster wants to head out onto the lake on Saturday morning.
Not very smart at all. White out conditions, poor ice conditions, blowing snow which will hide all traces of the trail.
What more do you need as an indication of just how bad a decision it is?
I'd say right up there with the dumb a$$ who drove his brandy new truck out on the ice to check conditions then sank it a few years ago. Need we say more?
