Today, Friday about 2.30 PM, I was coming down Weirs Blvd and noticed that the entrance to Christmas Island had several fire trucks and a rescue in the old motel parking area. Does anyone know what was going on ?

.

Hopefully they had minimal damage.

I live a couple hundred yards down the street from the old hotel and the steakhouse, I heard the truck sirens, looked out my window and saw them posting in the parking lot. I didn't think anything of it and went back to reading. My family, in Boston, calls me and says "what's going on at the steakhouse?" One of the neighbors on my street had called them to say there was a fire at the end of our street. I wasn't about to put down a Salman Rushdie book and walk down the street to find out.
She just called me at 8:00 and said it turned out to be a chimney fire at the steakhouse.
I can tell you that those are very messy fires and they can turn bad quickly.

Hopefully they had minimal damage.

You do not here of it often but when you do the investigation usually determines the cause is neglect. But the scary part is that many of the same places that have chimney fires also are found to have unsanitary conditions in the kitchen area.
I'm not saying that is the case here but I do notice that on the news the two generally go hand in hand.

I'd say most of the chimney fires are in private homes. We have such strict regulations in the Metro Fire area that restaurants are usually ok. After they lost 2 men and a dozen hurt in the West Roxbury Chinese restaurant fire in 07' caused by excess grease in the vent, there has been much stricter regulation and attention paid to kitchen hoods in restaurants.
