Personally, I would want four wheels under me, but if you are comfortable with just two, and have warm riding gear, have at it...just watch out for the idiots in automobiles!!! and there were plenty of them out there today according to the scanner.

How do you address the ice? It was slippery.

As I said, I want four wheels. However, I do have a few friends who ride whenever they can year round. I hate to assume anything, knowing what happens:rolleye1:, but I assume that you try to drive in the "lanes", drive slower, and drive defensively. Perhaps a cycle rider who does ride year round can weigh in on this.

When I was in college, I had to "reposition" my bike for the winter and it started to snow like yesterday morning. It didn't start to stick until about half-way into the 70 mile trip. Leaving out a lot of detals I decided to pull over and wait for the salt and sanders to get out. Twelve hours later the bike was in my father's garage. After that trip I never trusted the reports that forecast "dusting" and walked or hitch-hiked on those days.

This rider might have decided to wait a bit or maybe they just needed to get some heat in their guts by way of a meal and some coffee. On a bike you will feel the wind-chill very quickly even with a slicker and warm clothing.

Motorcyle policies do not have a "weather must be clear and dry, with temperatures in the 50's or higher" clause.

Some policies, at least the one's that were written by the company I worked for, expired on Dec. 31st each year, and required the policyholder to contact his/her agent to reinstate it on or after Jan 1st. this could, of course be done in advance.

When I road I had a nine month policy, basically excluded December, January and February. Once I call my agent about going for ride on a nice day in December and for $20 more they covered the whole year.

I got caught in serious snow only once. It was a very interesting ride but I survived.

He's probably a safer driver in unfavorable conditions than most who drive cars and SUV's with no understanding of how to drive in slick weather. More power to him. I drove home from Logan Saturday and was amazed at how many people drove like idiots.

I recently sold a Honda Scooter for a friend, to a gentleman in NY City. He has 2, and rides them year round. He took a train up to NH and drove it back in 35 degree weather. Even living in Queens, he puts on 20k miles per year with all of the trips he takes.

I had a Yamaha 250 MX in my glory days. It had studded tires and I would zip across the ice on the big lake and scare the crap out of the snowmobilers on the trails. Rad habits.

When I lived in Vermont, I rented an apartment from a guy that would ride all year long as weather permitted. Once or twice he got caught at work when a snow squall hit while I knew him. As long as the roads where salted and mostly wet, he would ride slowly home. Although I did get a call one time and picked him up.

Always to my surprise he was never worried about himself, or his ability to handle the bike in bad weather. The concern always was about the cars around him, and the fact that if they lost control, he wouldn't be able to get out of their way.

I was in North Conway on Saturday night and there was a Trike in the parking lot. Ate at the 1765 House/Inn. Bad night to be out with the snow and ice. There was a rollover on 16 in Albany, and few cars off the road. I don't think I would dare be out on my bike in that kind of weather. :eek:

Road riding on a bike in cold weather is really no big deal if you have the right clothing. Many riders have heated vests and grips. This particular rider may have had studded tires, too.

I am primarily a dirt bike rider and can remember accelerating up a frozen stream with Trellborg (studded) tires. THAT was fun!
