Just read in the Gilford paper that Lowes, Staples and Papa Ginos (along with Hannaford) are proposed. Also talk of a eatery chain (like Chili's, etc.).
The site plan will be before the planning commision on 2/7.

If this kind of development is going to happen, the location seems OK since there are other shopping areas around, traffic improvements have been made, and it is both easily accessible or avoided (just take the by-pass). I would probably frequent both stores listed. Just my take on things. The plans for development (http://archive.citizen.com/2004/january2004/january%5F06/gilford%5F0106b.asp)
have been ongoing for some time.

The Parafunalia store is closing their Meredith store and moving to what had been their seasonal Gilford store. Big, big mark-down, mooooving sale, some info at www.parafunalia.com This will make two large, no, make that, two huge vacant store fronts in the Rt 25 Meredith mini mall that includes Brooks Pharmacy. The space that was formerly October Farm Market, Parafunalia, and don't forget the Ben Franklin has been replaced by Wardo's which is a wacky store, imo. I say "blame it all on Wal-Mart, it's all Wal-Mart's fault, Wal-Mart is changing all the dynamics of retail." The spaces that formerly were Ames Dept store and Rand's True Value in the Tenny Mountain Hgwy Mall in Plymouth have been big vacant retail spaces for more than a year and the entire mall is up for sale by its' Boston owner. Why, just the other day, Proctor & Gamble went and purchased Gillette, America's world shaving dynasty company and I say, you can blame that on Wal-Mart, too. It's all the fault of Wal-Mart. Back a couple-three years ago, a gallon a gas went for 95 cents and Exxon was crying poor and went and bought Mobil. I say, blame that on Wal-Mart, too. Big bad Wal-Mart, what-a-bully!

A recent article in the LACONIA CITIZEN (http://www4.citizen.com/February_2005/02.08.05/news/gilford_020805b.asp)
In my neighborhood, even distant large parking lots have extreme lighting, which is robbing us of the dark night-skies of olde.
The article doesn't address any environmental impact(s).

Today's www.citizen.com has an article about Lowe's presenting a plan to build a store on Tenney Mountain Highway Plymouth, across from the Burger King, on what has been a very huge field of corn, I think. Its about one mile away from the new Super Wal-Mart. Does Plymouth need the extra property tax money? Does Plymouth need the 135 or so new jobs? Is a Lowe's better than a huge field of corn? What will this do to the snowmobile trail that runs near the corn field? Does it get dark at night?
Here's an unrelated aside. Did you all hear about the Wal-Mart with 135 employees in Quibec, north of Quibec City, that recently voted to go Union. Well, after the employees voted to go with a union, the Wal-Mart management voted to close that particular store. How about that?

Looks like they voted themselves right out of a job FLL.
If you look at the most recent financial report for Trader Joe's, they claim to be planning a store in Meredith at a location that sounds just like the old October Farms. Does anyone know what Trader Joe's is?
It's a chain of health/natural food stores. They have lots of store brand stuff without the salt, colors, preservatives... of the name brand foods.

Is Meredith changing away from an asbestos shingle making town or what-so? Four waterfront hotels, soon a Volvo new car dealer, and maybe a Trader Joe's. Plus, I hear the monthly rental prices for year-round Meredith rentals have gone up a bit.

Trader Joe's would be a great addition. Their prices are reasonably and everything is good quality. We usually stop by the one in Tyngsborough when were down that way.
TJ's has great coffee. Organic and Fair Trade, too. :rolleye2: They will be a great addition to the area. They carry all TJ label products ( dog and cat food to frozen enchiladas) at very reasonable prices. Their salsa is to die for :liplick:
Does anyone know exactly where in Meredith it will be? I hope its on my side (Gilford) of the Meredith crawl.

If I heard correctly, all the utility poles and electric-telephone-cable wires between the big intersection of Rts 3 & 25 and Pleasant St are coming down and being placed underground to unclutter the view. MVSB, HHH, NHEC & the ToM are splitting the cost. The MVSB's white utility building next to Spinelli's Movie house is coming down and presumably being replaced with something bigger(?).
Parafunalia is moving to Gilford and that leaves a big empty retail space, big enough for two stores, as it already has two entrances. Anyone, what's the latest on what may be going into that spot close to a new Trader Joe's that used to be Parafunalia? What type of a business would work out in that spot? Maybe a pizza joint? Maybe an athletic exercise joint? Maybe, maybe, maybe a Chinese or Thai ristorante? Maybe a, who knows, I give up. Oct Farm closed up in Oct 2003 and that big spot has been vacant ever since. What wpould work in Meredith in that spot? High rent, seasonal population, lots of grey hairs in the off-season. How about an office for the State of New Hampshire, like the NH Dept of State Property School Tax Funding and Money Laundering. At least you know they got your money and can afford the rent no matter how slow the winter gits.

I think it would be great if Trader Joe's came to Meredith. Since the market departed that mini-mall, the only store nearby is Jackson Star, which is overpriced ... or Heath's in Center Harbor. The new MVSB building will be a welcome addition to that part of town, it's going to be a lovely building. If we could just get rid of the ugly Brother's Pizza place on the corner. It's too bad that Parafunalia is moving, it's a fun store.
