Marina's That Don,t Add Stabilizer To Their Gas

Everytime we stop for gas we ask if a stabilizer has been added to the gas. Anchor Marina does not add stabilizer, but they said it could be purchased in their store. Gee thanks!!!

Fay's does not add a stabilizer. Given the range of opinions among boaters as to what brands are good or bad, this may be a reasonable approach. Also many boaters burn through gas at a good rate in the summer and don't need it then.

We add stabilizer of our choice the last one or two fill-ups in the fall and we know what is in the tank.

So the marina says it has added stabilizer to the fuel.
Do they tell you how much is added?
Has the correct amount been added for long term storage in the tanks or even enough to properly stabilize the fuel for the short term?
Truth is you do not know how much has been added so it is still a wise decision to take it on your own and add the proper amount of stabilizer to your fuel to prevent breakdown.
My belief is a quart of stabilizer cost a lot less then engine problems will.

Over on Sebago Lake in Maine, there are at least 2 marinas that carry the ValvTect fuel. It alreadys has all of the additives and protectants in the fuel to combat phase separation for up to a year.
It's good advice to take matters into your own hands as far as when the boat is put into storage for the winter. Stabilize it yourself.

Originally Channel Marine had the "Exclusive" on Valvtec a few years back ..

Now I know of the following that sell it as their regularly pumped fuel

I am not positive but I think the Marina in Wolfboro (name eludes me) -- Left side of Bay as you go in -- also sells Valvtec


It costs no more than standard Mid Grade .... I have been using it routinely since it's introduction on the Lake and have had no issues, including 2 winter storages with only 1/2 tank of fuel. For those interested, the engine is a 350 Mag

Additive gas is a personal choice, but, I put 1-2 ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil per 50 gallons of fuel in our boats.

It has proven to be a good racer's tip. It lubes the top end/cylinders and brings the combustion temps down a tad.

The Ethanol has a tendency to wash the lube oils away.

My other secret weapon is SeaFoam. Great stuff, especially for 2-stroke outboards that don't see a lot of high RPM use. It is a stabilizer and it helps clean carbs/passages and cylinder carbon build up.

The new Stabil for marine use is de-rigeur for winter storage.

I personally dont beleive there is anything in the gas at the marinas. I know someone that works at a marina with valvtech sign and he laughs. He says it is the same gas and truck that is delivered to the gas station in town. I rarely buy on the water.

Marvel Mystery Oil has been a staple in my garage for all my gas and diesel applications. I never had an engine or fuel system failure.

My Dad swears by it as it was heavily used during WWII.

I buy by the gallon and pour it into 16 oz canister for the cars/trucks and 32 oz for the boat.

I Totally Agree. Marinas add nothing. DO IT YOURSELF and be sure. Ask the Marina Gas Dock Exactly HOW...they ADD stabilizer. Blank Looks. Because they CAN'T explain something that doesn't happen. NB

I see that some of you are talking about 2 different things, Stabilizer or Additive. Stabilizer helps keep your gas from going flat. Gas goes flat in 1 month. I recommend adding to your gas year round not just over the winter months. Additive although it has some stabilizing ability helps control water in your gas due to ethanol. As far as Marina's adding additive to their fuel it is done when the gas is pumped into their tanks. It does not come that way from the truck so even though the same truck stops at more that one place it does not mean the marina did not get additive. I have been a marine mechanic for 30 years, Stabilizer is a must - If you think the marina does not add it than you sould add it yourself than you know it got done. If you add it and the marina does it again, too much is not a problem.

Gasoline/fuel delivery trucks have several compartments called bulkheads. Up to 5 compartments on a TT unit. Each one can carry a completely different product. In fact, when I order both gasoline and diesel fuel from the vendor I buy from here at work, it often comes on the same truck. Just because that truck stopped somewhere else in town means nothing. I highly doubt that a marina selling and advertising that they have ValvTect fuel is just applying the sticker to their pumps and lying about it.

Last week end at Meredith Marina the fuel truck was delivering fuel. Before pumping into the ground tanks he reached into the truck for the bottle of additive. How much he dumped in I have no clue.

Marvel Mystery Oil, now owned by Turtle Wax; it is bright red just like a glass of red wine and has a compelling peppermint smell to it. What is this mystery oil stuff, and doesn't go into the gasoline tank or into the engine oil?

Can only tell you what I know from a personal friend working at a marina on the lake. His word is good enough for me. Hate to be negative and say it but in todays world where everything is driven by the almighty $ you know darn well there are marina's not adding it, and/or not adding the proper amounts and upping the price. Agree with those above, add your own and play it safe.

They use Stabil. I see the 55 gallon drums stored near the filling area. I din't even know they had 55 gallon drums of that stuff.
