I had a nice bunch of impatiens in my planter that is camouflaging my stink pipe out in the back yard. They were growing in pretty well. Today I go out back and notice they were all gone. Something ate them. Also noticed that some were gone in different areas around the house where I planted them in the shady spots. Deer?

Definately deer. For years I used to plant impatiens around trees in our yard.
After awhile, we got tired of being the favorite salad bar stop for the local herd and gave up.

Deer ate them! Here on Bear Island, the deer will eat anything chewable--bark, flowers, ferns, small pine trees, rhodies, lillies, ANYthing.

I've tried to plant my favorite Impatiens here on the island, but the deer would gobble them up. Marigolds would get pulled out by the deer and left whole, as if to say, no thank you - these flowers don't taste good!
I have considered making a dome of sorts out of chicken wire, so that the impatiens can grow and fill in prettily. The deer should be limited to the damage they can do. I have yet to employ this method.
Good luck Lakesrider!

Since our dog has passed, the Deer on Welch island have had a buffet on my wife's flowers and and other assorted plants in her flower garden. Guess they feel safer knowing the dog is not around...

I don't how I missed this post back in the spring, but, we did buy deer repellent from LOWE"S , and as long as I sprayed, the animals stayed away. The little darlin's, ate everything, and buy last week everything had recovered, and looked nice! Only took the whole summer.......bummer
