Once again I would like to tap into the experienced seasonal home owners knowledge base. This weekend I will be ferrying some new mattresses and box springs out to the island. While removing a couple of the old mattresses I noticed that some of the beds had a thin particle board panel sitting on top of the bed frame and under the box spring. I wanted to do away with these panels when I install the new stuff but my wife insists that these panels are probably there to keep mice/critters from getting into the box spring to live during the winter months. Is this a concern? Do other of you have a similar "panel" under your box springs? If so....what do you use?

Were the 'boxes' a less-than-perfect fit for the frames? Many people use boards or plywood to make sure the box doesnt fall through the frame during normal movement.
