View Full Version : Okay you guys...into the deep freeze you go

I see on the Weirscam that it is 0 degrees.
Have fun shivering, and if you come down to Florida, let me know, and we can hook up.

By the way, it's about 40 here tonight, and we have a nice fire. For atmosphere and ambience.....not survival.

I love it there in summer, and spring and fall, but now I am gladder than heck that I am not there.

I just hope they are keeping my little Erin warm and safe in Meredith.

Stay safe, all.

Lady Di.

You're enjoying taunting us, aren't you Lady Di!! ;) At 8:45 am this morning (Tues) its 2 degrees here in West Alton. But by this afternoon we'll be roasting, as it's expected to get up to about 20! Good snow-making weather for Gunstock.

We only got 3" - 4" of snow here yesterday, but it sure looks nice out on the islands even with the cloud cover (Sleepers on the left, Cub on the right, with Rattlesnake behind.)

Nice shot Don! I see from the Wolfeboro Cam that Wolfeboro Bay looks like it has a skim of ice. The Bear Island Cam looks like ice too. Any ice skim along the shore where you are?

There may be snow on the roof; but I sleep warm with the thought that it will not be blown off as a hurricane moves through the area. ;)

Say, didn't some farmers down there express concern about their crops freezing, recently?

P.S.- Have a safe and happy holiday season.

No, we don't have any ice along our shoreline yet McD. And the temps are supposed to rise over the next several days with rain predicted for Thursday night. I think we're probably looking at early January before we get ice here, but that could be accelerated if we get some real cold weather between Christmas and New Years.

Oh My,,,Lady Di, you are cruel… ;)

Yes it is cold  but the weather if fine. Kind of like it that way here in the Northeast.

The lake doesn’t seem to have much ice yet but the picks of the snow are great. Can’t you imagine sitting with your SO in front of the fire sipping a little wine while watching a soft snow fall. Can’t do that in Florida now canya?

Oh and for all. I was up at my friends lake in Otis MA on Saturday. The lake is frozen over with about 2 inches of ice. The neat part was the lake was singing to us. Sounded a lot like how whales sound. Every time the ice cracked it would send the sound waves across the lake. It was almost continuous. A beautiful sound. Question is, does the big lake do the same just after freeze up?

Bet you can’t here that in Florida Lady Di. Just teasing. ;)

ToW

PS I wish you all a great holidy. Hope santa is kind. And please be safe.

ToW - You bet Winni talks in the winter! Your description of the "whale sounds" accurately describes one of Winni's "languages". As the big ice mass expands during the daytime and contracts during the cold winter nights, stress cracks are formed. Oftentimes at night the cracks will produce the whale sounds you mentioned, which are a kind of high-pitched, watery, echoing sound that seems to transmit for miles across the ice. At other times, many stress cracks seem to occur together and the sound they produces is like rolling thunder in the distance. That kind of sound can continue for just a few seconds or up to an almost continuous background drone. Then at other times, big instantaneous stress cracks can occur which sound like a high power rifle shot that echos off the islands and mountains behind us. It's really fascinating listening to the "talking lake" on a cold winter night.

Lily Pond in Gilford is now frozen over.

Lady Di

I don't need snow outside to sit in front of the fire and enjoy my wine
with my SO, in this case husband. :liplick: IF we REALLY need to have some snow, there's always TWC. Or a Hallmark movie for that cuddly feeling.

I also don't have to go out with a pick axe to get some more logs.

Oh......a really BIG bonus for us this year, was all the FREE wood that was parked at the roadsides after the hurricanes.

For us, at least, there was no damage. There was quite a bit of damage from Jeanne about a quarter mile from us, and some was really, really extensive, but we never lost power. This is not a regular occurence, however, like say........oh........blizzards? :D

I love it when it's like this here. It was nice and cold this morning, and for whomever asked about the freeze, there was some concern, but I don't think anything was lost this time. It's early yet, though.

Today warmed up to the high 60's....and there was a smell in the air just
like May in NH.

Every place has its good and not so good. I liked Meredith in September, and I like Mount Dora in the winter. It's nicknamed "The New England of the South". Lovely town, lovely people, lovely winters. Not so lovely
summers, but what the heck. A girl can't have everything, now can she? :)

I remember hearing lakes "talk" in the winter. Some of those messages were when we were driving in Wolfeboro bay.....and realized it might be wise to get off the ice, and back to The Bubble. :)

Went by Lily Pond yesterday (Mon) and there were snowmobiles out there in the afternoon. Hope it's thick enough!!!!!!! With snow cover on the ice, may be difficult to tell. Please be safe, snowmobilers. Don't be in too much of a rush, I'd hate to see the skidoo become a seadoo!!!!!

Don & ToW: Great descriptions of all those eerie noises the ice makes as it is settling and freezing. On my little pond it can sometimes be so loud it can wake you up at night as the noises echo off the mountains! The Fall and early Winter are great times at the lake. Very peaceful and quiet with most of the summer people gone.

Try the Live CAMs section of Lake Links (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/links/Live_CAMs) on this site or use Island Girl's great index with thumbnails (http://www.rattlesnakecam.com/lakecams.htm).

Lady Di,No disrespect but if your happy with living in Fla.that's great. This website is for the lakes region. Most forum members could care less about how nice the weather in Florida is cuz we love it here in New Hampshire.Maybe you should posts those comments on the Mount Dora website.I don't intend to be a wiseguy but but your posts on this thread tend to be on the"too bad your up there and I down here"attitude.Just my opinion.Sorry if I took your comments the wrong way. I have to agree with SS.

If I want to know what's going on in the geriatic state of FL, I would go to the weather channel. I'd rather stay here and brave the elements to prove that Daniel Webster is right. 'Only men are made in the Granite State'!

It's not too different here in Nashua, NH. It's been zero lately, but of course, we're just 90 miles south of the lake! :)

However, tonight is nicer! It's really warm, especially for December 23! We've had snow here, about 3 inches the other day, causing the local school district to have a 90 minute delay. But of course, again, we're in the same state! LOL!

BTW It's nice to be back!

My kids used to ski home down the backside of Belknap Mountain.

They could have had their passes pulled, but somehow, it didn't happen.

I am glad I don't have to do that now.

HOWEVER.......I was there, and it is fun to remember when I was doing it, and that I don't have to do it now.

A couple of months ago I asked about the restaurant at the entrance to Gunstock. Nobody answered me, but when I was up there, I saw it was the Arlberg. It seems to be now a retail store for winter gear. It was, in the days of yore, a really awesone restaurant. Best corn chowder ever, next to homemade.

OK,OK,maybe I had a touch of scrooge in me that day I posted to Lady Di.Forgive me Lady Di for I can be pretty defensive of my home state.Mom and dad just left for Venice Fla till April so I do wish you Floridians nice warm weather.I am very happy with all of the seasons here in NH cuz life to me would be very boring having temps in the 70-80-90's year round. But then,I love to ski on top of beautifull snow covered mountains as well as boat in the warm months of summer.Who was it that said"variety is the spice of life"?I think that applies to weather and seasons as well.Anyway, that's my take on life.Yours may vary. Sorry if I came off a little negative. SS

It's not the first time I have had my feelings hurt, and it probably won't be the last.

BTW, it was really, really cold here all weekend. Had a nice roaring fire for the whole Holiday. It was dreary, rainy, cold, with a wind chill of 35.

I personally found SOUTH Florida weather boring, but it's different here in Central Florida. It's a LOOOOONG way from the 70's and 80's today. It's clear today.

I am glad you're happy living where you do. I wish I could spend more time there, but alas, I have to make due living vicariously through those on this forum.

Happy New Year. :)
