I just confirmed a rumor that the Pine Cone will be converting the motel side of the property into a convenience store. Construction is to start this spring pending final bank approval. Does anyone have anymore details?

This rumor has been floating around for 6 months, or more, and I guess I'll have to see earth moving and boards being put up before I really believe it.
I find it hard to figure out the reasoning behind the idea, after all, Pier 19 doesn't last all year. Also, the access to Pine Cone is treacherous in the winter - on a curve, on a hill.
Maybe they are going to buy the food for their three restaurants from the convenience store, thus making the store look good.
However, like I said, when I see action I will believe the rumor.

A convenience store at Pine Cone would likely put the Tuftonboro General Store under. I hope the rumor isn't true as TGS is such a local mainstay, even if it isn't price competitive!

Dunno about that...they've survived Pier 19 and Skelly's so far.
They do not have the best location for people to get into and out of during the winter.
This past winter the hill was very slippery and not very user friendly
Tell us where the other two are and their names.
Are they as good as the Pine Cone?

They also own Bayside in Wolfeboro and Pine River in Wakefield (may be renamed but it is near that wood stove store)

It does not sound like a very good plan to me. Rentals and rooms on this side of the lake are in high demand and fairly short supply. It would seem that the additional costs and staffing make converting the rooms a poor choice vs. Continuing to rent the rooms... Best of luck to them though.

I guess I need to try the Pine Cone 'cause I find the Bayside not-so-good.

Pine Cone was great. We ate there last summer, food was delish and the service was excellent. We'll definatley go back.

The sign out front has a new addition: Pine Cone Country Store
There's also a signboard area that reads "Store opening soon, now hiring"

This is from the Tuftonboro Planning Commission meeting minutes:
"Carl Hansen stated the owner proposes to remove four motel rooms and put in a convenience store
(coffee bar, beer, wine & deli), storage room and emergency egress alarmed exit. He stated the hours of
operation would be 6:30 am until the time the restaurant closes, seven days per week; noting a lockable
door would be installed to close off the store from the restaurant when the restaurant is not open and vice
versa. He stated the lighting would be directed downward
John Cameron verified the facility would be year round. "

Looking forward to giving the new store a try. Unfortunately, it will be at the expense of the Tuftonboro General Store, which I think does a pretty good job. I can't imagine either of these stores will do particularly well given their close proximity to one another in a relative sparsely populated part of the lake.

I hope they BOTH survive. I miss the Melvin Village store in town. Every time I am over at that part of the lake visiting or sailing my Sunfish I wish there were a place near the lake where I could pick up sandwich or a drink.

The store opened about a week ago. I went in a couple of days ago check it out. Very nice layout, with sort of a smaller version of the Pier 19 product content. They had a fairly large variety of beer/wine/specialty alcohol, in addition to the expected soda/chips/candy stuff. They had a large selection of Hood milk products, and a good cut of the basics: fresh veggies, eggs, bacon, cheese, bread, and frozen stuff. I wouldn't want to do my weekly grocery shopping there, but it would be easy to put together a meal with what they sell.
The owner was there, and he confirmed they are planning on being open in the winter also. That'll make it a very nice addition to the area for us year-rounders.

Our first visit to the Pine Cone..............a wonderful meal with great service (Our waitress was Linda, she was super) and an immaculate and super clean dining room. Portions were outstanding and each of us in our party of four were blown away and frankly, troubled that we had never tried this restaurant up until now. We will be back for sure, what a pleasant surprise.........NICE JOB PINE CONE!

The Pine Cone has the BEST pizza in the lakes region. I only wish they would DELIVER pizza to the Pier 19 docks. Now that would be GREAT!
