What is the overall feeling/feedback on the above mentioned school systems? We are looking to move to the area full time and would have 2-3 kids in the schools (2 now, another in a few years).

Is there an after school program either through the systems or locally? Coming from the Dover area we have a lot of options presently.

Hi Codeman,

The best advise I can give you on this is to make an appointment with the principals of each school of the two school districts, get a list of questions together, and take a tour of the schools (while it is in session) and see what that brings you. Talk with administrators, teachers and parents from the community.

Another thing to consider: keep an eye to the WHOLE public school experience (pre-K through grade 12), as if you're considering moving to a neighboring town like New Durham that sends their students to Gov. Wentworth in Wolfeboro, that they may NOT always have that arrangement - it may be that the students from a sending town are sent elsewhere at sometime.

Personally speaking, when we chose to live in Alton we had been looking at homes in Barnstead, Pittsfield, Northwood, Laconia, and New Durham. We picked Alton because of the low tax rate and because the school had a good reputation. (My husband is a public school teacher so he had some inside knowledge about it.) At the time of our move, I was working in Portsmouth and he was working in Bristol, so we both had quite a commute each day. I love living in Alton and think we have the best little town in the LR - but that's my opinion.

Only you and Mrs. Codeman can decide what's best for your kids and what's going to work for your family.
