Yes we have the low grunt of the Black Bear in the woods at night warning you to stay away. We have the call of the Deer and even a Moose or Two at night. We have the crickets chirping their perpetual chirp. We also have the call of the Loons reaching to us from the Lake below. Then at One in the Morning we are awakened to the sound of.......

Went on for twenty minutes or so of off and on commotion. When I heard the rustling in the leaves very close to me, I made straight for the front door. Like the little girl that I am....:D:laugh::D

Do you have any idea how far the distance was from the animal to you. I am assuming that the rustling of the leaves was not happening at the same time as the calling.

Sounds like a fox cry.

Anyway, check this site out. Not fully comprehensive, but a good start.

I believe it to be a Fisher. I have fox around my house all the time. Both red and Grey and I never hear this kind of call/scream except on very rare occasions.
I used to hear it all the time when there was a Fisher living in the rock wall behind the neighbors house. But it left and I had not heard that cry in quite a while until the other night. I have not heard it since. I did hear some fox battling it out in the woods last night though. Sounded bad too.
I walked around to see if I could find hair, blood or a body but nothing.
Keep in mind the weather is getting much nicer at night and I am able to leave the windows open at night now. No more A/C. So I am getting to hear more activity out in the dark. I am very light sleeper, so almost anything wakes me up at night.

The call I posted was very close. Maybe 20 or so yards away. I did hear some movement at the time of the screaming. As I said it went away but then started to get closer to me and so I headed for the house. Not so much afraid of the animal, but that call is kinda creepy when you are standing in the pitch dark.....:D

The first audio on the first link above sounds a lot like a fox bark. A bit baritone, but maybe some of the NH foxes are more robust than ours down here in PA. BTW -- just had one barking here in our neighborhood night before last.

The original sound clip, however, sounds more like a fisher. I'd love to hear one, or, better yet, see one. Cool stuff.

Fisher...note that fish and game has a facebook page now. If you post that audio clip on their page, they will give you 100% confirmation

My neighborhood fisher cat is back. I've heard him in the morning but have not seem him.
I guess my eyes don't focus that early in the morning.

But cool because it wasn't in my yard!

The sound of movement that you heard might have been whatever prey the fisher flushed out with it's screaming. I think they can be very tricky little devils.
