Is this Sunday the annual salmon stripping @ Pope Dam? It seems to usually fall on the second Sunday in November, but I haven't seen anything.

One of these days, I'll get around to scanning and posting some photos from past salmon strippings.

I just looked at the NH Fish and Wildlife web page - It was held last year from 1 - 3 PM - I would guess that it would be held at the same time this year????

"Salmon Sunday," at Pope Dam in Melvin Village on November 14, 2004, from 1 to 3 p.m.

If you head through Melvin Village, you can't miss it. The dam sits back from the road, behind what was once the general store & post office. Just south of the "crossroads" and the public docks on 109.

F&G personnel take the salmon from a large holding pen in the dam (caught in nets during the fall) and squeeze the eggs from the females, and the milt from the males. Then they mix it together, pour into large jars, and send it off to the hatcheries. When the resulting fry are a few inches long, they are released in the state waters. The adult fish are released, unharmed, back into the Lake.

It's a really cool event -- and a rare chance to see a good number of good-sized landlocked salmon (and a few lake trout usually).

HI Grant!
Were you at the Salmon stripping Sunday? I was there about 1:00 PM and it was the first time I had ever gone. The Fish and Game Wardens were really informative about what they were doing, how, and why. I even got a few good photos. It was a very educational experience, and would be well worth anyone going to next November. Especially small children. If you were there when I was, I was wearing the "Boston College" jacket. I hope you and EVERYONE on the Forum, has a fantastic Thanksgiving!

Unfortunately, I was some 437 miles southwest of Pope Dam on Sunday. Haven't been to a Salmon Sunday in 11 years now -- although I was flirting with the idea of making the trek this year.

You're right -- the Fish & Game guys are very informative, and you learn a lot about the fish -- ID'ing males from females, and telling the salmon from the occasional Laker that they pull out. Pretty cool. And those fish are absolutely beautiful.
