Oh, I guess it was about 20 years ago. There was somekind of flying object that had an odd shape, that used to fly over The Weirs during the fireworks. I am quite sure it was somekind of advertising gimmick, but for the life of me I cant remember what for. Anybody who knows anything about it please speak up. Any pictures ? It is an ongoing debate in my family.....

No, Glen, I wasn't worried about you being a "Loon" but I must say I was beginning to wonder what's in the water in Lindenwald these days!

If it makes you feel any better, I asked Waldo if he remembers anything like what you described. He's been here 19 years (I've only been here 13). But he's summered here all his life. Anyway, he says he does remember that they used to fire a flare up - attached to a parachute. The idea was that the boats were to scramble around trying to get the parachute to land in their boat. Can't imagine why they ever stopped that practice! :rolleye1:

Meanwhile, I'll check with some of my customers who've lived in the Weirs their whole lives, and see if they can shed any more light on fireworks ufo's.
I'll get back to you as soon as I can locate any more info.

That might be what it was, but I seem to remember, whatever it was, it was towed behind a plane and kinda looked like a pinwheel

Just to confuse you  , there were many available military surplus flares that had parachutes attached to them. The military used them as signal flares. I remember being in Wolfeboro when they were used and went directly over my house. This was a cheap mans 4th. ;)

I too remember the parachute with the flare. Back in the 50's and 60's they shot it up like a regular firework and then the chute would open with a large white flare attached. All the boaters went crazy because there was suppose to be some kind of prize if you were able to get the chute and return it to the fireworks people. Those were the days when they had an emcee on the bandstand to do the count down to the beginning of the show. The fellow who shot them off was named Dominick. The emcee would always ask if Dominick was ready and he'd wave his flare to signal he was ready. What great times we had Sunday nights at the Weirs - fireworks and caramel corn. We kids loved it! :liplick:
